First 3 lotr movies are simply awesome! I love them all!
It's pretty funny, 3 books, 3 movies, while hobbit is like what 500 pages book and we get 3 movies!!! Makes no sense at all. I would understand if they made only 2 since it's new thing in hollywood, but three movies for only one book is way to much!
lotr was certainly well done (pt.1 the best, pt.2 slightly inferior, pt.3 pretty tired and the weakest), but i was kinda surprised how jackson managed to ruin these 2 hobbit movies as if he was never involved in doing lotr before, as if he lost any previous creativity/inspiration in the meantime - just making things up randomly, continuously copy-pasting recycled scenes & characters while getting in a state of video-game frenzy, the outcome becoming ever dumber and lesser by the minute (a dumbed-down lotr wannabe) eventually failing to re-ignite that middle-earth spark/fire that powered the original trilogy - this last point is basically the worst of his numerous failures in making the hobbit movies, thus:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) 4/10
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) 4/10
irrelevant, a competent director with proper inspiration would achieve respectable results in any of these scenarios - jackson had a (large) number of aces here, yet shamefully wasted them allOriginally Posted by VA
I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like at 80% onward in the movie (or so, when they start battling smaug), the cgi and special effects simply dumbed down, seeming like it was rushed. I haven't checked the dvd/bluray, i'm referring to the theater version.

CGI looked pretty good to me. Watched bluray.
@slik do you think that guilermo del torro, or what's his name, would make better movies, since he was first choice to direct but when dropped out Jackson stepped in?
i saw only the (non-scene ) screener version, didn't think the cgi was anything special, just average for a big(ger) budget movie, unimaginative in terms of choreography (action scenes), having some obvious consolitis problems (was half-expecting to see coins/points appearing at some point heh)Originally Posted by alpacino
probably not, judging by his recent 'pacific rim' debacleOriginally Posted by yoco
maybe del toro could have made it weirder (à la pan's labyrinth or hellboy) or bloodier (blade) or funnier (hellboy), but such speculation is rather pointless (after the fact)
i mean, no one could beat jackson's references/results with lotr, he had 'the feeling' first time around, he should have owned this material,... and the guy blew it (twice), go figure
@yoco: FYI the creatures in the movie are all created/designed by Guillermo del Toro, you can see a striking resemblance between monsters like Azog and the ones in Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth.
