By far `Das Leben der Anderen`It is one of the best German Films of modern times for drama

.. and mario barth is by far one of the best german comedians in modern times.
sicherheitshalber noch das schild dazu, man weiß ja nie..
alle charaktere sind als gutmenschen und opfer dieses ach so schlimmen systems gezeichnet, die dialoge und die inzenierung sind dabei immer allglatt bis zur unkenntlichkeit. nicht wirklich my cup of tea (hollywood und der mainstream mag sowas ja, siehe oscar)..
nimm den thread hier doch zum anlass und schau dir maln paar sachen an, die man sonst nicht so runtersaugen würde.

Hi Pillow, i watched a couple of movies suggested in this thread & were really good.

1. Das Weisse Band.:- This one really touched me a lot. Hanke has done a great job imo, with a mixture of black & white cinematography results in a cumulative & episodic structure. The actors too did a wonderful job.
2.Das leben der Anderen : This is an epic movie! What i liked the most is the tension & curiosity that gets created while we go along with the movie. Hatss off!

..i can also recommend this one, about drug addicts, not as fun as Trainspotting but darker, grittier:
Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)

..if you don't mind romantic melodrama with lush costumes/scenery see this austrian (also german language) trilogy:
Sissi (1955)
Sissi: The Young Empress (1956)
Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress (1957)
