Suggest some good native German movies.

    Hi guys..

Firstly , sorry .. if it's in the wrong section.

    So here's the deal.
I am learning German language,so i felt one of the ways by which by i can learn well is by watching German movies

Most of the trackers are having the dubbed version of Hollywood movies . This could have helped me , but i hardly find any German subtitles

So please suggest me some good movies which are basically German made, so that i can find the subtitles in German language.(films like Der Untergang ..ohh man i loveed this movie)

    Regards
    Kelly

i'm too thinking of learning a third language ,

    i summarized the languages:
the languages i don't know what to select.

    1. French is for ladies, girls and full of Gh Gh Gh and some eating of letters so i'm thinking of skipping it..
but since its widely spoken and easy to learn i'm adding it here.

    2. Spanish is full of "r" aka Garro carro perro .. but its something widely spoken too and easy to learn so i added it.

    3. German is full of "ch" and v's which sounds like bombing a canon when talking lol, but its popular so i'm adding it, also somehow inspired by the german members here.

    -----
even if i sounded offtopic, i want to know why you've chosen German to learn?
also are you learning via a Language center or self-learning?
    ----

as for answering your question i don't know anything but i'll just leech your answer when someone answers it

"Keine Lieder über Liebe"---> with the wonderful "Heike Makatsch"

    "Berlin calling"
    "Liegen lernen"
    "23"
    "Netto"

    are very good german movies!

join ::: ESELKULT - Filme, abseits vom Mainstream! ::: !
i have been there for many years, they have the biggest archive of german movies (older & not the horrible mainstream stuff) AND almost all of the international ones come with an additional german dub track, so you can switch between german and english, perfect for learning.

some people there are also actively subtitleing to german or at least finding the corresponding german subtitle for a movie.

you dont need an invite, its an emule site, so a little patience is required for getting the files, but you will notice that it is a relaxed and helpful community (also because auf the average user age there ).
you can ask there also for tips, they could surely help you more than here, coz they are movie buffs and also many of them studied film.

btw get the fassbinder movies, they will give you a good insight into germans in a more non-conform way. because he is one of the most famous german directors after the cinema crisis in germany - end of 50ies till end of 60ies, in that time cinemas and productions diminished by almost 50%.

then the german new wave started with herzog, wenders, kluge, fassbinder ..
maybe you should start in that area (before there was art only in the 20ies/30ies with murnau, pabst, lang).

angst essen seele auf - Angst essen Seele auf (1974)
die ehe der maria braun - Die Ehe der Maria Braun (1979)
die blechtrommel - Die Blechtrommel (1979)

in the 80ies lots of german production companies tried to change their movies to a more big budget/international way, like "das boot" or english spoken productions like "fitzcarraldo" (with the great klaus kinski!), "neverending story" and "the name of the rose".
in that decade you could check out
christiane f - wir kinder vom bahnhof zu - Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)
theo gegen den rest der welt - Theo gegen den Rest der Welt (1980)
die weisse rose - Die weiße Rose (1982) (this one particulary if youre interested in the nazi time, you mentioned untergang)

in the 90ies, again after a crisis, the terrible german relationship comedy genre started, which was (at least for me) pretty horrible. like "maenner", " der bewegte mann" etc..
still some nice productions were made in the 90ies like
    winterschläfer - Winterschläfer (1997)
bennys video - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103793/l (one from the early haneke!)
lola rennt (link above, most famous, but i couldt really get warm with it)..

now coming to the new millenium, you should defenitely check out some of
christian petzold's movies -> start with "innere sicherheit" and go chronologically..
sophie scholl - die letzten tage - Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage (2005)
bang boom bang - Bang Boom Bang - Ein todsicheres Ding (1999) (one of the rare funny german comedies)
die fetten jahre sind vorbei - Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (2004)
gegen die wand - Gegen die Wand (2004)
    milchwald - Milchwald (2003)

actually most, if not all of these are available with english subs at karagarga also i think. i could send you an invite, but since this is one of my favorite trackers i would ask you to not cheat there if you can avoid it..

sorry for the longer post, but it was nice remembering also .
but be aware, most of my tips are not really for the ordinary cam-download-only-care-for-brainless-entertainment-film-consumer..
if youre ok with that, send me a pm for the kg invite.

there is a site mainly with german subtitles here > SUBTiTLES.DE ::
and i am sure you know about DivX-Untertitel zum Herunterladen aus der größten offenen Untertiteldatenbank already ..

.. and have fun learning german (it will be fun, but not in the beginning for sure )

edit:/ urgs, should have known that the forum software is so intelligent to automatically post the names of a page instead of the imdb links heh..

You can disable this by unticking "automatically retrieve titles from external links" below the additional posting options.

you can also get originally english spoken popular movies, but in a german dubbed version (when done as scene release you can recognize the german dubbed version by checking if it has the word German in the title) and then find some english subs for it

    examples:
    Code:
    Hostel.Part.2.German.PROPER.DVDRiP.XviD-EMPiRE
    Hostel.2.UNRATED.DiRECTORS.CUT.German.Dubbed.2007.DVDRiP.XviD-LizardsGods
pillow gave some sources for the german subtitles, not sure if video players can show both english & german subtitles at the same time though

i don't think subs alone are good to learn a language. get movies with german audio not just subs.

there's one movie coming up or running already about a small village in the woods in the 1920s or so. the book was very successful already. just can't remember the title. some sort of mystery thriller.
imho that might be one of the very few german movies with some sort of quality. iirc it was a cooperation with a swiss production firm.

    just remembered the title

oh i am terribly sorry if i hurt your feelings.
suggesting kelly something he said he did see already is not THAT helpful.
and imperatives dont really scare me.

By far `Das Leben der Anderen`It is one of the best German Films of modern times for drama but if you are looking for a german comedy Traumschiff Surprise is a really good one, as far as German comedies go.
