Thunderbird provides an open-source, cross-platform email alternative for those of us who still use stand-alone email clients (and I am one). It’s trust-worthy, it’s under your control, and it’s built to reflect the Mozilla mission. Once again we’ve been asking the question: is Thunderbird a likely source of innovation and of leadership in today’s Internet life? Or is Thunderbird already pretty much what its users want and mostly needs some on-going maintenance?

Much of Mozilla’s leadership — including that of the Thunderbird team — has come to the conclusion that on-going stability is the most important thing, and that continued innovation in Thunderbird is not a priority for Mozilla’s product efforts. As a result, the Thunderbird team has developed a plan that provides both stability for Thunderbird’s current state and allows the Thunderbird community to innovate if it chooses.

It's open source, maybe someone will continue working on it. This was my best option until now for all the mail accounts i use, the web based clients are full of ads and unsecure.

It's pretty sad, it's difficult to say, but hopefully some developers will continue to improve on it. But it's pretty true that web-based client are taking over the market share.

I knew about that service for a while but never really payed any attention to it.Seems pretty good though.
Linux dudes and Mac dudes have some pretty good alternatives but Windows users are kinda fucked.

I don't like outlook because it lacks of an advanced email filtering system. I don't even want to mention that it doesn't support regex (neither did thunderbird). I get 50 mails a day (no, they aren't spam). What should I do, quit my day job?
The interface looks extremely bloated with unnecessary features.

I used postbox back in the day when version 1.0 was launched. I liked it very much but it is shareware. You'll always have to wait for a version to be cracked or keygenned.
It's just a mail client. Why the need to pay?

I just switched from Gmail and Outlook to Thunderbird.

I think it has been improving a lot , nicer UI , tags , and add-ons that make Thunderbird very helpful.

You know, the 2012 version of myself missed an important aspect: The more features it has, the stupider it is. I think that people that need features like directories, mail filters, tags, reminders.. are doing it wrong.

I used a lot the tags feature, it helps me to organize and prioritize the emails. I just get used to use it with Gmail. Having a email hosting provider and Thunderbird has been working for me last couple of months .

I haven't used them since. To my thinking, all of these organizational features are just of way of delaying tasks. I don't know how to properly explain it; it's like you have to do something, but instead of doing it, you delay it, and these features makes it easier to do so.

I think I know what you mean. Instead of "Just do it" you plan to do it and delay the task Although in my case I have to tag and prioritize when having several tasks.

Been using outlook too much lately. Calendar of outlook been a killer feature. Any idea if Thunderbird now is mature enough to replace outlook ? Calendar integration is there ?
