1. if no torrent available, searching the rapidshare engines for a scene release so I'll know it's legit and not some lame RIP from iTunes or whatever
2. eMule searching for VBR or above 192kbps though source here is dodgy and unknown.
3. buying @ beatport.com and other EDM web stores
You can also perform a search through Baidu MP3:

Good idea! This is my small contribution:
0daymusic.org
Great for electronic-trance music. Actually it has its own firefox addon
Findtoyou.com
A good one and here you can see the song size if you want to download it.

Sometimes I use a rapidshare search engine as rapidlibrary (the best in my opinion). Just write the song title + mp3.
At last but not least a mp3 search program called: supermp3download, Iknow, I know, you have to pay for it but it has been cracked already.

One question about spotify: why we need its invite because i'm seeing several requests for its invite. Does it have any special previliges or even you can use it as you wish aka free?
In some countries,in order to get a free account you need an invite.
I don't know if anyone here already mentioned it, but warez bb is a good place to download music too.
Great Great list!
I think it all comes down to what type of music you are looking for.
If it is commercial "hits", torrent or Rapidshare and the like is the way to go.(Pop-Rock-Metal-Dance-etc)
Discographies in general are quite available through emule (think of 3+gb RARs)
If you are into some underground genre then try soulseek.
If you are looking for current date, indie stuff or not-so-known bands, and have free time, then Rapidshare and the like will do.
I personally do not like streaming services. I think they do nothing but clog the series of tubes that the internet is
If you love music, you've got to be a member of last.fm
Did you know last.fm has a section called free downloads where new or indie artist/bands upload their own songs for free distribution...
Free Music Downloads
^ is probably my no.1 source for unknown/new/obscure music...
Also there is the majestic alter-side for all types of rock/metal stuff...
