and has been the norm for thousands of years, the difference is fi. that today there are many more people dedicated to reporting/covering these events and the news spread quickly on a global scale, not to mention the media tendency to blow it out of proportions

supposedly japan experiences some 1000 earthquakes every year, making it a highly seismically active area, which occasionally achieves quite serious levels:

Yup, but this earthquake is a historic one, I'm sure the Japanese people will remember it for a long time.
