Movies from 2012 worth watching - A retrospective

an overview of movies from 2012 imo worth watching (includes movies from 2011 or earlier, whose scene dvdrips/bdrips got released in 2012) - due to a rather poor year regarding quality entertainment there is a higher number of older internals included in the list

    action:

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) has its moments, can't reach the first two parts of the franchise
Premium Rush (2012) very lazy script, fun/enjoyable chases
The Bourne Legacy (2012) decent sequel that resembles more to a bond/MI kind of movie than a bourne one

    adventure:

Honey I Shrunk The Kids (1989) light family entertainment

    animated:

Brave (2012) a breath of fresh air in the otherwise stale animation genre

    comedy:

The Dictator (2012) not quite the rampage, its aladeen enough if you can handle its offensiveness

    drama:

The Secret Life Of Bees (2008) solid acting (especially d. fanning), somewhat melodramatic, even queen latifah isn't annoying here
Trouble with the Curve (2012) somewhat cheap/shallow but eastwood & co. manage to pull it off

    fantasy:

The Avengers (2012) only for the cgi & some funny moments
The Dark Knight Rises (2012) only to see the conclusion of a trilogy, otherwise a weak movie

    fighting:
    -

    horror:

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) refreshing addition to the genre
    Underworld: Awakening (2012) just average

    other:

Andy McNAB - The Ultimate Warrior (2002) documentary - SAS training
Girl Model (2011) documentary - teen model exploitation
Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2010) documentary - life in the wilderness
Nitro Circus: The Movie (2012) documentary - extreme stunts

    romance:
    -

    SF:

Chronicle (I) (2012) nice indie surprise, blair witch style camera
Prometheus (I) (2012) not quite as entertaining as the alien quadrilogy, still a pretty good outcome

    thriller:

Farewell My Lovely (1975) old school noir, good dialogue/monologue
Hard Rain (1998) slater in his prime
Narrow Margin (1990) lesser hackman thriller, still tops current genre representatives

    western:

The Hanging Tree (1959) not your typical western, more drama oriented, though well done

as for its status of 'most pirated', makes sense, every teenager (maybe also their parents hehe) had to see it...via public trackers ofc

haven't seen the 3rd part yet, thats why only the first 2 were mentioned

intentionally skipped that one because of the contrived plot and unappealing actors...can anyone else confirm its 'worth watching'?

I just mentioned it because in your list there's The Dictator, which I couldn't even watch first 30 min, unlike Project X which I like! :)

Slikrapid good selection of 2012 movies

Prometheus ,The Cabin in the woods and The Dictator were awesome in my opinion!!

I considered "The Hobbit" and "Django Unchained" worth to watch them too

The first one really suitable for you if you like The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and the second just because is a Tarantino's movie and all his directing style flick. I'm looking forward to watch "Life of PI" looks really interesting

PS I watched Project X and for me is just a dream party nothing else

*spoilers ahead warning for the timid/sensitive crowd*

i thought 'end of watch' was pretty embarrassing - things that happen to these 2 (ordinary) cops are unbelievable and exaggerated to say the least, i mean you've got them involved in things like:
    - exchanging insults with some gang member, taking off the uniform and getting in a 'who's tougher' 1on1 fight + filming it all like its a joke, afaik that particular gangsta gave them the tip about their lives being in danger later on!
    - getting anonymous tips on trivialities yet turns out its about big deals happening in the neighborhood
    - violently handling a missing children report as if they are doing a drug bust (the script keeps helping them so that whatever judgement is made, it looks like it was justified)
    - saving children from a burning house (notice the laughable cgi fire there) where the parent(s) just stand confused in front of the house (they didn't even bother to pick a large house for believability)
    - getting medals for bravery (for something firemen do almost on a daily basis)
    - more laziness: cop stabbed in the eye kneeling on the sidewalk like a sculpture (no blood whatsoever?), they have a chat and still manage to stumble on a perp fiercely stabbing another unconscious cop in the nearby alley
    - getting death threats for ordinary police work like searching a house (which turns out to be a big human trafficking 'storage')
    - the human trafficking bust was scripted so lazily i was rolling eyes constantly
    - another major eye-roller: avoiding getting shredded to pieces by 4? ak-47's from just a few meters away, no obstacles in between, not even a scratch on them + as if that wasn't enough, one of the cops survives another shredding (this time at point-blank range!) where he wasn't even moving (more awful cgi there too)...talk about an idiotic script or directing
    - mostly rather dull or ridiculous dialogue, examples: 'how to keep your cop husband', inflated cops with an attitude all around, ohh here come teh detectives...they smart, you know? look mr. detective, there are shell casings in the burned car (was that observant or what, next stop: detective exam), or the introductory parroting about cops being the good guys (what was that, elementary school education/indoctrination?)
    - the usual hollywood routine: interracial team (ohh politically correct...applause), smarter cop=white (no one noticed, the applause must have been too deafening), guess who survives in the end?
    - the movie was basically very close to a propaganda-filled advertisement for police-force recruitment (cool, important, adventurous, respected, authoritative job and whatnot)

the good? some weird/unusual camera angles
    worth watching? come on...
