OBJECTIVE:
In this tutorial, you will learn the following:
A. what specifically a MAC Address is;
B. why one would want to change his MAC Address;
C. and demonstrate how to alter (spoof ) your own MAC Address ( for the sake of learning how to do it yourself);
D. finding alternative (softwares) to spoof your MAC address for you.
Its a lengthy tutorial, but you'll gain knowledge if you read it in its entirety. So take your time to understand this thing.To gain full benefit of this tutorial, its important that you read the full tutorial in its entirety. There's no sense in directing yourself to the "How To Change MAC Address' portion of this tutorial , if you don't even know what it is in the first place, let alone why you'd want to change it.
WHAT IS A MAC ADDRESS:
Simply put, your computer's MAC Address an identifier element that consists of a six byte number identifier that is attached to most Network Adapter Cards or otherwise also known as a Network Interface Card (NIC).
You see, all network cards, whether they are Ethernet NIC's or Wireless Networks, WiFi or even HiperLAN adapters, all have different MAC addresses.
The MAC Address on your computer is a burnt and imprinted element on your computer's Network Card.
You can't physically change it, only spoof it.
In your computer's OS, your MAC address is represented by a 12-digit hexadecimal number. Here's an example, 1A-2B-3C-4D-5E-6F.
WHY CHANGE A MAC ADDRESS:
There's a few reasons why one would desire to change his/ her MAC Address or the Network Adapter. Changing one's MAC Address is known as MAC spoofing.
Here's an example:
To get past a tracker's IRC IP and MAC Address filtering to request a free invite from Tracker ABC.
Such a trick can be used to get pass the Network Access restriction by emulating a new unrestricted MAC address, or to gain an access connection by spoofing an authorized MAC address after sniffing for a legitimate MAC address out of the air in MAC filtering in a Wi-Fi network.
Changing a MAC address can keep the real and genuine information from been detected and logged by various services such as an IDS (an Intrusion Detection Service), a firewall, a DHCP server, a wireless access points. Its also essential to protect a user’s privacy.
You should be aware that MAC spoofing can also potentially trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) attack by causing a routing problem while duplicating a MAC address that already exists in the network, especially those that are similar to gateways.
Now. The good part.
HOW TO SPOOF YOUR MAC ADDRESS:
WINDOWS:
Go to Start -> Control Panel. Double click on Network Connections (inside Network and Internet Connections category in Windows XP).
Then, you'll need to right click on the Active Network Connection with network adapter that you want to change the MAC address (normally Local Area Network or Wireless Network Connection) and click on Properties.
Excuse my sense of privacy throughout this tutorial. Too many bad people on the internet that want to Ban-Hammer me.
The arrows in this tutorial help direct to where you need to look.
Your MAC address consists of 6 pairs of numbers (0 - 9) and characters (A - F) combination.
Here's an example, 88-17-E8-90-E2-0A. When entering the new MAC value, omit the dash (-), for example 8817E890E20A.
By default, the “Not Present” radio button is selected. Change the value by clicking on the radio button for Value:, and then type in a new MAC address to assign to the NIC.
Take your pick as to what you want.
Ensure that you have at minimum 3 letters of the alphabet selected.
When your done selecting your new value, click 'OK'.
Now, for For Windows Vista, access to the NIC’s properties is from Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections.
VERIFING THE CHANGE IN MAC ADDRESS:
Go to the CMD prompt, and type in one of the following commands:
A. net config rdr
B. ipconfig /all
EXAMPLE using
net config rdr:
Again, (A): The arrows help point to where you need to look and (B): Excuse my sense of privacy .
EXAMPLE 2 using ipconfig /all:
ALTERNATIVE METHODS:
There are third party tools and utilities that help to change the MAC address in Windows OS. There are plenty that exist.
For example: SMAC , Macshift , BMAC, Mac MakeUp , MadMACs (MAC Address Spoofing And Host Name Randomizing App For Windows, EtherChange , and Technitium MAC Address Changer.
DISCLAIMER:
1. If you screw up your computer using any tool that I've mentioned in the list or the hack that I've demonstrated in the above tutorial to help you safely get past IP and MAC Address bans at various trackers. Its your fault. Not mine.
2. You either didn't know what you were doing, weren't reading it all, or are simply a computer noob ( or, er....computer NOB?? )
3. Even if your computer blows full force in your face after successfully spoofing your MAC Address, you still can't blame me.
There are other methods that exist to changing or spoofing one's MAC Address. That other method includes going into the registry. Its a little more complicated but definitly NOT hard.
If you'd like that method to be tutored, please do let me know one way or another.
Apparantly, methods do exist to spoof one's MAC Address in Unix/ Linux systems.
If you like this tutorial, please do say thanks. It gives me an idea if what I'm tutoring is helpful or not.
