How To Spoof Your MAC Address

    OBJECTIVE:

In this tutorial, you will learn the following:

    A. what specifically a MAC Address is;

    B. why one would want to change his MAC Address;

    C. and demonstrate how to alter (spoof ) your own MAC Address ( for the sake of learning how to do it yourself);

    D. finding alternative (softwares) to spoof your MAC address for you.

To gain full benefit of this tutorial, its important that you read the full tutorial in its entirety. There's no sense in directing yourself to the "How To Change MAC Address' portion of this tutorial , if you don't even know what it is in the first place, let alone why you'd want to change it.
Its a lengthy tutorial, but you'll gain knowledge if you read it in its entirety. So take your time to understand this thing.

    WHAT IS A MAC ADDRESS:

Simply put, your computer's MAC Address an identifier element that consists of a six byte number identifier that is attached to most Network Adapter Cards or otherwise also known as a Network Interface Card (NIC).

You see, all network cards, whether they are Ethernet NIC's or Wireless Networks, WiFi or even HiperLAN adapters, all have different MAC addresses.

The MAC Address on your computer is a burnt and imprinted element on your computer's Network Card.

You can't physically change it, only spoof it.

In your computer's OS, your MAC address is represented by a 12-digit hexadecimal number. Here's an example, 1A-2B-3C-4D-5E-6F.

    WHY CHANGE A MAC ADDRESS:

There's a few reasons why one would desire to change his/ her MAC Address or the Network Adapter. Changing one's MAC Address is known as MAC spoofing.

    Here's an example:

To get past a tracker's IRC IP and MAC Address filtering to request a free invite from Tracker ABC.

Such a trick can be used to get pass the Network Access restriction by emulating a new unrestricted MAC address, or to gain an access connection by spoofing an authorized MAC address after sniffing for a legitimate MAC address out of the air in MAC filtering in a Wi-Fi network.

Changing a MAC address can keep the real and genuine information from been detected and logged by various services such as an IDS (an Intrusion Detection Service), a firewall, a DHCP server, a wireless access points. Its also essential to protect a user’s privacy.

You should be aware that MAC spoofing can also potentially trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) attack by causing a routing problem while duplicating a MAC address that already exists in the network, especially those that are similar to gateways.

    Now. The good part.

HOW TO SPOOF YOUR MAC ADDRESS:

    WINDOWS:

Go to Start -> Control Panel. Double click on Network Connections (inside Network and Internet Connections category in Windows XP).

Then, you'll need to right click on the Active Network Connection with network adapter that you want to change the MAC address (normally Local Area Network or Wireless Network Connection) and click on Properties.

Excuse my sense of privacy throughout this tutorial. Too many bad people on the internet that want to Ban-Hammer me.

The arrows in this tutorial help direct to where you need to look.

Your MAC address consists of 6 pairs of numbers (0 - 9) and characters (A - F) combination.

Here's an example, 88-17-E8-90-E2-0A. When entering the new MAC value, omit the dash (-), for example 8817E890E20A.

By default, the “Not Present” radio button is selected. Change the value by clicking on the radio button for Value:, and then type in a new MAC address to assign to the NIC.

Take your pick as to what you want.

Ensure that you have at minimum 3 letters of the alphabet selected.

When your done selecting your new value, click 'OK'.

Now, for For Windows Vista, access to the NIC’s properties is from Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections.

VERIFING THE CHANGE IN MAC ADDRESS:

Go to the CMD prompt, and type in one of the following commands:

    A. net config rdr

    B. ipconfig /all

    EXAMPLE using
    net config rdr:

Again, (A): The arrows help point to where you need to look and (B): Excuse my sense of privacy .

    EXAMPLE 2 using ipconfig /all:

    ALTERNATIVE METHODS:

There are third party tools and utilities that help to change the MAC address in Windows OS. There are plenty that exist.

For example: SMAC , Macshift , BMAC, Mac MakeUp , MadMACs (MAC Address Spoofing And Host Name Randomizing App For Windows, EtherChange , and Technitium MAC Address Changer.

    DISCLAIMER:

    1. If you screw up your computer using any tool that I've mentioned in the list or the hack that I've demonstrated in the above tutorial to help you safely get past IP and MAC Address bans at various trackers. Its your fault. Not mine.

    2. You either didn't know what you were doing, weren't reading it all, or are simply a computer noob ( or, er....computer NOB?? )

    3. Even if your computer blows full force in your face after successfully spoofing your MAC Address, you still can't blame me.

There are other methods that exist to changing or spoofing one's MAC Address. That other method includes going into the registry. Its a little more complicated but definitly NOT hard.

If you'd like that method to be tutored, please do let me know one way or another.

Apparantly, methods do exist to spoof one's MAC Address in Unix/ Linux systems.

If you like this tutorial, please do say thanks. It gives me an idea if what I'm tutoring is helpful or not.

Thanks for this very good tuto. But a point remains unclear to me. You quote "You can't physically change it, only spoof it", but then you write "HOW TO PHYSICALLY CHANGE YOUR MAC ADDRESS", with seems a bit contradictory. Moreover, I would like to understand a bit more about the connection between anonymity and Mac address spoofing: In clear, could some antip2p people indentify me through my mac address ? If so, have I some advantage to spoof my mac address (in other words: if I spoof my mac address, would antip2p people have some mean to see my "physically" mac address, or could they only access to the spoofed one ?).

Ps: I have found this software:
Technitium MAC Address Changer v5 (FREEWARE)

What do you think about it ?

That's a very good question. From my experiences, when you spoof your MAC address, all programs will see the new, fake one, and won't be able to know the real one. However, it's possible that anti-P2P groups have coded a tool that works around that, so in my opinion there's no clear answer.

Also, remember that after changing your MAC, you'll either be given a new IP, your ISP may not recognize the new one without a router/modem restart and therefore Windows get stuck at "getting network address"; or, if you have an static IP, this method may not work at all for you (i.e. you'll be able to spoof your MAC, but will never get your connection working).

I guess I should have been more clearer with respect to 'Changing your MAC Address'.

The interpretation of that statement is that your going to the Properties
section that I've outlined for you to go to and your, yourself are physically altering the MAC Address within your computer as specified in the tutorial.

In other words, your letting your fingers do the walking.
You, yourself are doing the work as opposed to some software.

That is the essence of the statement 'Physically changing your MAC Address".

Yes. Of course your not physically changing it to something completely new so that you wind up with a brand new MAC Address, your altering it (physically altering/ spoofing it, that is while your poking around your computer. That's what I mean. ) in the sense of spoofing / faking the one that's burnt to your machine and using a fake MAC Address.

    Hope that clears things up.

And about the Technitium software. What I like about that one is that it gives the user a few extra MAC Address's to choose from. A little more than SMAC does.

It has an updated, or at least the latest list of all known manufacturers that you can choose from.

as a user, you can also enter any MAC address and know which manufacturer it comes from.

Essentially, it works the same as others do.

But don't let a lack of MAC Address that SMAC may be limited to dissuade you. It also does the job it's designed to do.

It basically makes a change in the registry, as do all others so that your MAC Address is spoofed. You could do this yourself and I was actually thinking of adding this to the tutorial, but I decided against it for the moment.

The only reason why I would have added this is for the sake of learning potential. Much the same as the reason why I made up this tutorial. As opposed to having some software do it for you.

Learing can be fun. And that's why I did this tut.

EDIT: There is actually a way to physically change your machine's MAC Address.

It basically entials in having to remove the flash chip from your computer's NIC card.
You then have to re-program it with a completely new MAC address.

An IP address is the one other hosts can use to contact you.

A MAC address is your network card's unique identifier.

If you want a MAC address generator, eg you are too lazy to think (like myself), then here you go. I was worried I wouldn't properly think-up a MAC address and went in search of a simple generator; in my searches I was guided to a forum post. One of the replies contained a link to this generator, which I found useful. I recall reading that there was no homepage, and that the poster who provided the link, did not want the generator to just die off.

I'm fairly confident there is no copyright on it, and the author even joked (right click Macgen.exe > Properties > Details > Copyright) "free to do whatever you like to it", so I see no reason why it can't be posted.

Just remove the colons, the ":", for use with this guide.

If anyone is looking for another tool, MadMACs has not failed me yet. It, plus the MacGen posted above, are all you need to spoof a new MAC. I've no router, so I cannot say how this will work with one. YMMV.

Is your MAC address revealed/logged when you use a web browser? I was banned from what.cd months ago, and I'm afraid of rejoin (despite numerous ways to get an invite) b/c of the MAC address thing. I know that there was a fiasco with Melvinmeow where everyone got banned from a lot of trackers after visiting the BCG/what.cd IRC, so I thought maybe they can only detect your MAC address if you join the irc.

Is it safe for me (using proxies obviously) to rejoin what.cd? Can they detect your mac address via your announce?

    @ Nishant:

What happens is they basically use a protocol analyzer, you see.
They do this to determine which MAC addresses are in use on a network.

I don't believe your MAC addy is revealed when browsing. Unless the protocol analyzer is configured so.
    Otherwise your IP is identifiable.

Your IP is logged by various marketers, for example. Such as when you go to a link that displays your IP.

So with respect to browsing, your IP is logged, but I don't believe that your MAC addy is logged.
Agian, the protocol analyzer would have to be configured a little more differently, though that would not be difficult for some site (someone will have to correct me if I"m wrong with the above statement if they are more knowledgeable on this specific subject).

Anyways, you can get software that'll change your real Internet address while browsing.

    There are many:

    such as
    Invisible IP Map 2.7 Get
    I've seen it here:

FileGets: Download Invisible IP Map Software latest version from author site

and of course, there is this of which I'm sure that you've heard of before:

FileGets: Shareware Hide IP Platinum 3.43 Details at Internet category by Volcano Force

the best thing, in my mind, would be to do the IPConfig-thing which is basically where you change your IP completely as well as the cache.

You do the following in the cmd window:

    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Also clear your browser's cache.

    I would reccommend this.

Other's may state it's not necessary, but in my experience, I have found it necessary as I was still identified from a previous visit.

This was due to a cookie still inside my browser.
Now with you being identified via your announce, perhaps...if you didn't change your IP, that is.

Can you also be identified via your announce through your MAC address??

I have no idea, though it could be possible. Again, it would also depend on What.CD's announce configuration.

If their configuration identifies both the IP and the MAC addy during the announce, then I'm sorry.

    @Stikkbutt:
I believe MadMACS is already listed in the list I provided in my tutorial.
