Would just like to point out that Ubuntu 9.04 RC and I would imagine the stable when it comes out, solved my Atheros AR242x driver problems automatically.

    It did so upon installation.

When I installed Ubuntu 8.10, my Atheros AR242X WiFi card was recognised, but would never work. It would never display any wireless networks, and when I installed Wifi Radar, the problem continued. After some Googling, I found I had to stop the installed drivers from running and install new ones using a guide on the internet.

I was considering installing XP SP3 N or Windows 7 Beta, both lightweight OSs, but then saw that the RC had been released on the same day.

When I installed 9.04 RC, it recognised my WiFi card, and was able to choose a wireless instantly.

    vEry interesting, splicer.

Glad you were able to find a solution to your problem.

There must have been some addition to the RC that was not, perhaps that is, available in the older version.

I'm definitely going to try and use Ubuntu and Debian more on my poorer computers. Though there are problems with Linux, which I feel prohibit it from it's user base expanding.

The fact that commands are still used alot will scare people; especially the older generations, who just manage with Windows (like my dad hehe). Having to remember many commands is a pain, but one learns...

Drivers, as I have mentioned can be an issue; most drivers were designed to work with Windows and it's really communities who try to find work-arounds to be able to use hardware on Linux; until companies create open source or multi OS drivers this will be a problem - though it has got better. My MicroSoft mouse worked the second I plugged it in (Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04).

I also faced problems with Ubuntu whilst giving different user's capabilities such as root access. I tried two things which I'm sure would have worked: adding my username as part of the root group, and editting the sudoers list via visudo, but still no go. Ultimately I gave up, deleted all accounts and am using the root account.

Other than that it is a fully stable, light weight OS, that everyone should try. You don't even need to install Linux to try it, and even if you don't like it, what has it cost you? Nothing.

I have to admit. I do agree that using the commands does limite the userbase from growing. Most especially remembering all the various commands.

I have been thinking of using, after installing, PUppyLinux.

    Have a look here:

I"d like to have something fairly small installed, myself.

I did try the Ubuntu installer once, you know. It was one of the older versions before Wubi came online. Now I am thinking of installing it once more.

Yeh, PuppyLinux looks good and the fact that it isn't based upon a larger distribution definitely shows that there are some good coders behind it.

I am thinking of downloading the v4.1.2 as opposed to the newer version. I can't remember what I read about it, but there are some bugs that still need to be worked out with the newer RC of puppylinux.

What I like about puppylinux are the puplets where one can install and customize thier version. I really like that.

What 1st attracted me to puppylinux is the fact that one can install it to a USB drive.

    Here's the link:

This I really like a lot.

Here's the major reason why I like it:

....this is useful when you want to run Linux on a computer, but have no CD writer (or blank CDs) or floppy drive. ....
and with its small size, ....90 some MB, that'll be perfect. Though I do wonder that after the installation, how much it will really take up.

You know....with browsers and other software.

My current USB drive is 1 Gb.

Though, I think that this should be enough.

    I have one question here:

Have you ever heard of partioning a USB drive??

Right now I have it formatted to NTFS, yes??

I don't really want to format the entire USB drive (again, based on whether this is even possible with USB drives), just a portion of it....say 500 Mb or so.
