The Fall
The Fall (2006)
I realise I should have written something about this film sometime during 2008, but better late than never. In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances.
What makes The Fall such a beautiful film is the artistic cinematography with symbolic use of colors, panoramic nature stills and vivid vibrant contrasts.
All in all it's a pretty simple tale about love and revenge, being told by a suicidal broken man; and interpreted, envisioned and told back to us by a little girl.
What's fascinating about this movie isn't really the story itself, or the way it's being told, it's how Tarsem manages to weave reality into fiction, and making it compelling and believable.
Filmed over 4 years, in 18 different countries. In terms of being a visionary film, it makes 300 look like a Russian snuff film.
