    MPC + LAV + ffdshow + tweakings? this'll be epic (this will be more epic if you have NVIDIA CUDA) ..

    note: don't even try to use CoreAVC or madVR, these things will eat you (for low-mid end pc's)
    although using one of these two, will really make your videos more vivid and sharp looking, specially for hi10p|10bit video

    CoreAVC actually reduces the resources needed to decode video in comparison to other H.264 codecs, so I'd recommend using it wherever possible. The difference can be quite noticeable.

    madVR, on the other hand, is indeed only for those with monster computers.

    I use Mplayer or SMplayer for all of my video. I feel that VLC has gotten a bit bloated as of late, while (s)mplayer is fast and plays everything. Not to mention it also streams and all that fancy stuff.
