Instead of using an activator, try installing an old windows 7. (valid or not, doesn't matter to MS)
AFAIK you can still upgrade that legally to a win10 for free, despite that the time limit on that offer has passed.
He prefers a clean install over an upgrade, and so would I. Nice to know about that "amnesty", though, Microsoft must really want people to get on the Windows 10 train.

There is a link in Microsoft's site where you can still download the upgrade. It's meant to be used for people with disabilities or similar, but it's the same thing and there is no verification process.
