    Pacific Rim

Release Date: July 12, 2013 (3D/2D theaters and IMAX 3D)
    Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
    Director: Guillermo del Toro
    Screenwriter: Travis Beacham
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day
    Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' sci-fi action adventure "Pacific Rim." When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

This doesn't seem like such a bad movie to watch when it comes out. But one thing I don't get is that if this 'godzilla'-type of monster ascends from the depths of the earth, why did it not present itself before? Why now? Also, why wasn't it identified or discovered at some point in human/earth history? Doesn't make sense. Stuff like that always makes me wonder about the historical events within the storyline of some films.

What I think might be good about this film is the technological expression in it. That is, the construction of these giant human/machine what-ever-thing they are? That looks good. And I wonder also about the technological realism expressed therein. Perhaps for example exo-skeletons (used even today in some militaries) but on a different scale.

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro
umm, whose best effort to date might be 'blade 2' as director and perhaps 'hobbit' (2012) as screenwriter, whose major directorial flops include movies like hellboy 1&2, pan's labyrinth, etc.

To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers
which is basically a combination of mecha/robotic machines hunting down (japanese) monster creatures, or a continuation of a recent trend involving (giant) robots as seen in: transformers, iron man,...

which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge
which is a silly concept and not necessary, also one pilot is enough (other member(s) should have other functions, no?)

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes
here we go again, our 'heroes' just have to be some underdogs (a bit strange that they aren't teenagers too) vs. legions of almost-unbeatable monsters, it doesn't get much more (pointlessly) exaggerated than that

they explained: a portal between dimensions (suddenly/unexpectedly/conveniently) opened deep beneath the ocean and they started pouring in

you said it, current technology...that gets a more futuristic look, bigger in size, sillier in 'how some of it works' (like the neural bridge nonsense), super-hyped in its importance (it'll save us roflmao) and the moral of the story is: lets all financially support increased military efforts to build ever greater monsters (weapons of any kind) because its necessary to be prepared to fight even/ever bigger bogeymen lurking around the dark corners of the universe (which often translates as: SF writer's imagination)

as for the movie: not very convincing director, 'anonymous' actors, good cgi, probably a ridiculous plot,... a likely flimsy outcome

also, most of these 'Kaiju' movies are pretty bad/laughable, perhaps a somewhat watchable/decent version might be:

    Godzilla (1998)
