I played a few shooters competitive awhile ago when I had the time to do so and I needed a mouse which allows me to turn around fast but still provides enough precision to hit someone perfect on 1-2 pixels with a scope and for that I needed such a rather expensive gaming mouse with a high dpi value. It also has nearly the same form and ergonomics as my old one. For desktop/office purposes I would only consider the form and ergonomics.

Logitech M905. I use it for normal desktop stuff, nothing fancy.
The best things to look for in my opinion is DPI and ergonomics. Basically with those two you are set.
