Question Which VNC server & client software to use?

Which of the following ones are most lightweight in terms of RAM:

    RealVNC
    Remote Administrator [Radmin]
    TeamViewer [TV]
    TightVNC
    TigerVNC
    UltraVNC
    pcAnywhere

Which one is better in terms of connection reliability, good for low bandwidth [upload and download + compression] and generally overall? Server & client does not need to be from same maker or company.

Should I use SSH with VNC forwarding? Is Hamachi or Tunngle used?
TightVNC has TightVNC: VNC Viewer with SSH Tunneling, a portable version [only client or the server as well?] and is recommended for low bandwidth computers.

I am not interested to use any SSH server besides WinSSHD or something similar. It is very frustrating to use Cygwin.

I use Remmina on my Linux Machine.

    Very easy, stable and fast.

Remmina - The GTK+ Remote Desktop Client

On Windows (and sometimes also on Linux with Wine or CrossOver) I use TeamViewer.

TeamViewer is for free if you use it for private. Commercial Licence is up to 1900 Euro (!)

A short word to CrossOver: I you like "Wine" you will love "CrossOver". Try it!

    This account has been disabled
    Reason: Fake upload

Do NOT cheat. This involves; ghost leeching, spoofing and/or use of a modified client in anyway. If you, or anyone on your IP/server is found to be cheating then ALL users on that IP will be disabled.

Radmin is where it's at. It encrypts traffic and works well over low-bandwidth connections (yes, I tried it over the Internet too), so no problems there.

Windows also has RDP built-in, what's wrong with that one?

It lacks security and is more prone to attacks, IIRC.

You know I've never heard of Radmin before. I'm going to check it out for myself. I've come across some of the other ones mentioned above...the more well known one's that is.

    Oh, oh. Better use LINUX.

Does it encrypt only the login or the whole session? Most of these only encrypt the login information.

I personally use this. It's the only one I found that logs in as a new instance, rather than take over an existing one. I rather hate that all the other progs I've tried do this, especially since I don't want a computer to log in on its own, nor is the computer I'm talking about headless, making it even worse.

As long as there isn't another program that can do this, I will stick with the built in client. As for security, I personally never felt the need to do this over the internet so it's not an issue for me.

Edit: Also, I heard security has gone up muchly so in the newer versions?

A bit, yes. RDP has been troubled with bugs and exploits, etc.

everywhere i worked we use RDP though, so it can't be that bad, seeing how much security is up for everything else. Though of course, we can only rdp internally. We need to log in through vpn in case we need to rdp externally. I guess that way the exploits are gone. As for bugs, I have yet to find one.

Personally I suggest you do something like that.

I personally use RealVNC, also over Internet and it's quite good.
    Can't compare it though.

Are you looking for a quick solution for remote support? If that's the case I recommend going with TeamViewer, easy to setup, and very robust. Used it in many instances and it's quite easy to get the other party up and running.
Long time solution for computer administration? Go with a solution from the VNC family, RealVNC for more customization or TightVNC for lower resources.
If you want access to a desktop environment for a windows server ( I do not recommend running windows servers - had a some bad days with it ), look at the line above.
If you need to access a linux box, than I don't really get the need for desktop environment though you can successfully run Xorg over SSH.

Thread has pretty much been resolved. I've outlined clearly what I'm looking for Thanks though.
