Post Resources and tips for slow Internet connections (<1Mbit)

    • Disable Flash and Java. Use NoScript or your browser's equivalent to only run necessary JavaScript. Maybe disable images as well, even use a text-only browser if the connection is very slow.

    • If you're on Firefox, the following addons can help improve your browsing speed, or at least your perception of it:
      • Adblock Plus - block advertisements from sites SimpleBlock is much better and faster, although somewhat harder to set up for the newbie.
      • Image Block - conditional loading of images
      • NoScript - control what JavaScript code gets to run
      • Ghostery - block tracking from sites
      • RequestPolicy - control cross-site requests
      • Fasterfox - performance tweaks. Careful with this one as the wrong settings could actually slow things down.
      • BetterCache - force Firefox to cache resources for which it's okay to do so.

Remember, less things to download = faster browsing!

    • Increase the size and storage time of your browser cache. I've set mine to 100MB and "never" check images for updates.

    • Use the mobile version of sites whenever possible. You'll lose some functionality, but they'll load much faster than their normal counterparts. Here's a list of the most popular services:

    • You can try using proxies specially designed to compress traffic and accelerate loading, although they make you share an IP with many other people, and might break some functionality. Don't use for places that do not allow proxies.

    • Download and install Acrylic DNS Proxy to cache your DNS requests across restarts. That can greatly help. Make sure you read the documentation after you install it!

    • File downloads and video streaming of any kind over slow networks is not a good idea. Low-quality online radios (like di.fm) will however work fine if the link isn't exceptionally laggy, as they demand little traffic.

    • Use TCP Optimizer to tweak your TCP/IP settings. Keep the receive window size to 32767, and enable offloading whenever possible.

    • Don't run more than one network application at the same time. Do a virus/malware scan to make sure you don't have any nasties that may be doing so.

If you have any more tips, please share them here.

Hi anon, thanks for this useful tips, I liked the idea of Acrylic DNS Proxy I'll test today.
But why you recommended to stay away from P2P and use one-click hosting services, I have (0.25 Mbps) line and i usually get about 25 kB/sec download speed with P2P
and it's almost the same with Direct download (or +3 kB/sec) which is absolutely nothing
because all this Cons you'll find in one-click hosting (like waiting time, no resuming issue and many other problem)

    "never" check images for updates
I don't see this option anywhere in FF.
Did you use an add-on for this?

I think he meant to say was to check the Radio Button under Advance->Update- 'Ask me what I want to do'(To ask the user what to do if an firefox update is available ~ To save bandwidth since otherwise it would automatically download/update killing your bandwidth)

i think because p2p use many connections, one click hosters use one connection direct to you. slow connection is not made for p2p.

Exactly because of what mammamia11 mentioned. Less connections equals less overhead and more room for the actual file transfers. If you want to evade the waiting times and such, look for Premium cookies on the Intenet.

Nope, I use Opera and that's available on Preferences -> Advanced -> History. Apparently the Firefox equivalent is creating a setting called browser.cache.check_img_frequency in about:config and setting it to 2.

Don't enable link prefetching, don't use a high number of connections (I think 8 per server and 16 globally are fine), and be careful with pipelining, it may speed things up, it may not.

Why don't you advise to enable prefetching ? Isn't a priori a way to accelerate vizualisation of sites ?

It's not as good as it sounds. If a page has 10 links and you only visit two of them, the rest were only wasted bandwidth that can be spent on something you actually want to read.

No point using the YT downloader. JDownloader works perfect for this task.

    Just for information.

I have reviewed the some Pale Moon's (*) default settings:

    Connections:
Max HTTP connections: 256 (maybe a little rude?)
Max HTTP connections per server: 15

    Keep alive connections: enabled
Max keep alive connections per server: 6
Max keep alive connections per proxy server: 8

    Pipelining: enabled
    Max request to pipeline: 16

    Pipelining with proxy: disabled

There also exists in Pale Moon an integer variable that doesn't exist in Firefox (but that easily be created of course): nglayout.initialpaint.delay

In Pale Moon its default value is 150. It seems to be the delay (in ms ?) the browser wait before it reacts to the informations it received. But then, why not to set it to 0 instead of 150 ?

(*) A "Custom-built and optimized Firefox browsers for Windows Operating Systems", dedicated to performances.

As people with little connection often have PC with slow processor, few memory etc (the opposite would be garbage), it would be useful to handle as much as possible with FF memory leakage.

There is an adon for that: Memory Fox.

A more global software can be useful to: Prolasso. It permanently scrutinizes every process running on the PC and decreases or increases priority of some of them, in such a way that no process will block the computer, or consume excessive resources.

Indeed 256 is a bit too much. In my Opera, I use 8 connections per server, 32 overall, pipelining and keep-alive enabled. Anything higher doesn't bring a noticeable speedup.

The initial paint delay is how much the browser waits begin rendering the elements it has received so far. Setting this too low might improve your perception of speed, at the cost of extra pressure on the CPU. Unless you have an ultra-fast machine and network, the default is already too low, and 0 is even worse. Opera has a similar setting called "redraw after..." which I've set to 5 seconds, because there's little sense in seeing a page you can't yet interact with load piece by piece.
