    Never Cry Wolf (1983)
    The Deer Hunter (1978
    Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
    Paris, Texas (1984)

well, i'll partially agree with you and give some remarks:

    The Deer Hunter (1978)

good acting, clumsy story (many holes in continuity, believability/realism), the rather typical mainstream patriotic propaganda (good guys in the clutches of 'righteous' war and 'evil' enemies), afaik 'nam veterans largely didn't like it

    Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

good performance, but with a lot of hidden messages & agendas beneath the surface (racism disguised as anti-racist labeled movie manipulating/steering opinion of whats a good-'white' & bad-white, jewish supremacy/exploitation disguised as caring for poor gentiles, see the talmud definition to realize what its all about)

    Jeremiah Johnson (1972)

i liked this one, though it got tragic & exaggerated towards the end

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

didn't like this one at all, way to lengthy, with nothing relevant to say, overly self-indulgent, not to mention the glorification of 'legends' with lacking on-screen factual portrayal & intentional historical ignorance/distortion, just look at the movie title - its quite accurately describing the shallow/cheap approach

some of my recommendations that roughly fit the topic:

    adventure:
    Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
    Legends Of The Fall (1994)
    Into The Wild (2007)

    drama:
The Bridges Of Madison County (1995)
    The English Patient (1996)
    The Horse Whisperer (1998)
A River Runs Through It (1992)

    western:
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
    The Searchers (1956)
    Dances With Wolves (1990)

Admittedly, some of these selections are pushing the limits of your definition. Those are found below the marked line. Those looking for precisely what the OP wanted, beware.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.

A Korean movie ,which revolves around love, innocence, life etc incorporating allusions & metaphors. Amazingly stunning cinematography. The dialog's fit very much to the scenario A must watch.
