Java has a terrible, terrible performance, it is used because it is easy to learn, easy to use, and easy to develop. That means more work, in less time, with less-qualified workers, which turns into money for the software company, and a crappy user experience.
.Net on the other side, is the reinvention of the wheel, but licensed, with propietary tools and at the cost of a private jet...but hey, it is also easy to use, and it is hip!
Can you imagine webapps built in C++? THAT will be cool (yes i know it exists, sorta, but it is more like a proof of concept than a useful development)
Everything is better as long as it is open source or free

Open Source does not equals better, it equals to having acces to the source code, period.
Enterprises need solutions, support, something that works from the box, with documentation, etc, etc. And Open Source doesn't even mean free.
I support Open Source, but let's be realistic people, we do not live in an era of harmony, cooperation and equality, we work for big companies that make a profit out of our work, we do not work for ourselves or the society as one.
