If you really want good atmosphere then old Dario Argento-movies are very good.
Like Susperia, Inferno, Phenomena. Also The Church which he produced.
I think they are nearly unbeated in atmosphere.

Of course The Beyond and City of the Living dead by Lucio Fulci are very atmospheric.
But they are real splatter movies.
