Hi.

I want present to you my...

New project: "Brave cow"

The project is not related to cheating, but I think it is interesting. What is this? In brief: I use my router to download/seed torrents from any tracker without a PC

How I did it?

I recently bought a new router "Netgear WNR3500L". This is "open" router, so we can use open-source firmware

I use Tomato 1.27 firmware by Teddy_bear. Router have USB, so I plugged my HDD drive (before, I format it to ext3 file system). By router (connection with SSH) I installed rtorrent and great GUI rutorrent. Now, through a web browser in a simple way I can add and delete torrents

We may share and download files in absolute silence twenty-four hours a day with your computer off. Is silence, a good ratio and energy efficiency.

Very interesting, I made mini torrent box that kept overheating, this is a much better alternative if the router - usb drive transfer is reliable enough for torrenting.

Btw is that tomato by teddy_bear an official tomato release?

Btw does the rutorrent need some webserver installed on the router, or any special kind of packages?
How is the performance, how much torrents are possible, how about larger ones and so on...

really not worth it for the time and it isn't that effective unless you use a NAS or something, I tried this on a WRT54GL but gave up hope you have a good time experimenting

That's amazing! - completely eliminates the need for a seedbox!

Ok. Today I have BETA 11 Tomato from teddy_bear and torrent is stable as a rock. Some evidence?

Look this:

No any crashes, errors etc.

This is my rtorrent GUI (rutorrent):

In preview release Tomato Beta 10 etc. router have random crash. In Beta 11 all works properly

Of course if we do not want rtorrent + rutorrent we can replace him to Transmission or Deluge

But for a router rTorrent should be much less resource-intensive, right?

Great idea and accomplishment, I'm glad it worked out for you, and wish I could do the same... But I fail at basic assumption: my D'link router doesn't have USB

edit: well, nor do I have USB powered HDD ^^
