I personally think IE8 was a great jump from IE7, and if IE9 improved upon IE8 and stole some tricks from Firefox or Chrome, it'll be pretty damn good.

Internet Explorer 9 Developer Preview is only bunch of tests and specifications. It is not functional browser. It is installed separately from IE8, it is removed with the same msi file it was installed.

Looks like the JavaScript engine got a total face wash, although it still has a long way to go - 55/100 on the Acid3 test

But don't hold your breath - it won't be released this year, nor will it be compatible with Windows XP.

Which is a big step in the wrong direction in my opinion.

    for you maybe..
why would Microsoft keep supporting their old OS while they've already released 2 new ones?
    they lose money that way

MS wants people to migrate to the newer OS Windows 7. If they wanted to they could make an XP version but then it would highlight the security differences in XP and Windows 7

On the one hand they are a company as shoulder said that's following simple economic rules - maximizing profit / keeping the enterprise "alive".

On the other hand the IE has to be a step forward wich means, as good as WinXP was/is, they have to start developing it on a fresher basis with new features. And of those features they've talked about, was the build-in support of directX which, in my opinion, is a huge step in the right direction!
But this feature needs the directX10(.1?) support, which isn't officially available for WinXP.

Not supporting XP is basically the same rationale as how they slowly phase out support for the old OSes. Besides, there's really no point for someone to stick with XP now that 7 is out.

Not upgrading from XP to Vista is more than understandable, but 7 simply blows XP out of the water.

If I had a choice between XP and Vista and I had used moeny to buy Vista and I had freely downloaded XP, I would still use XP.

Not putting the new IE on XP could be a secuity problem rather than simply pursuasion, they just handle security differently.

Those still sticking to XP have until 2014 to upgrade, thats like 3 years and a bit - a massive amount of time in the computing world. Many more advances in Windows 7 (or even newer Windows) will have come by then.
