The mystery surrounding the disappearance of an Iranian scientist, said to be involved in Tehran's nuclear programme, has deepened with speculation that he may have defected to the US.

Washington has denied any involvement, with reports on Thursday quoting Ian Kelly, the US state department spokesman, as saying the US had no information on Shahram Amiri.

In the article, notice how Iran is claiming him to be an Iranian citizen rather than a nuclear scientist. Also, notice that in reading the article, it states that Iran is accusing the US of interference, suggesting that he was obviously important to Iran.

well, they are correct as the usa is actively interfering in their politics

speculation that he may have defected to the US

i don't know about this guy, but who would defect & leave his family (wife) behind at the mercy of the government, also, it would be more useful for the usa to keep him inside iran as an active informant - once he is out of iran, he is also out of the loop, which means they would need to find another informant
