No "3 Strikes" in Spain, Watch Out Torrent Sites

Just days after ISPs in Spain confirmed talks with the music and movie industry had ended without success, entertainment companies have now backed away from their "3 strikes" demands after it became clear the Spanish government does not support their plan. They will go after 200 BitTorrent sites instead.

As if DHT and international trackers didn't exist... I guess they have to make it look like they're doing something about the whole "piracy issue".

nevertheless, this is a clear signal to other governments & ISPs that resistance is NOT futile

Basically, all those BT sites have to do is remove all forms of 3rd party advertising and they should be safe; I believe the first (or at the very least a landmark case) anti-p2p trial in Spain to end with a BT site being shutdown was because the owner had 3rd party advertising and was making a profit.

that may be the current excuse for anti-p2ps, but how is a web site supposed to pay for server bills?

maybe if they made the costs/profits transparent - in that case the anti-p2p's would have to find another excuse (apart from the obvious one of course)

Very good point in concerns to the running costs; most sites, notably FunFile, just send PMs out every month asking for donations. Other, more elite sites like ScC and ScT kind of force you to pay, because if you don't have a seedbox or aren't a cheater, you have no way of surviving there other than donating for Gb.

Other sites, like ExtremeBits, have some sought of deal with their hoster in that they only pay like $600 a year, so when it comes down to donation time, there's enough people to chip in, even though there's lless than 10000 members.

I agree that advertising is a good way of raising the money for running a site, but if these 200 BT site want to avoid a court trial...
