China starts meddling with Google results because of porn

China has begun taking action against Google's apparent "dissemination of pornography" by blocking access to certain Google results. The block seems to only affect Chinese-language sites so far, though, so authorities have also asked Google to stop searching foreign sites too.

An impatient Chinese government has begun blocking some results from Google China Friday, just one day after the country's Internet watchdog group criticized Google for "disseminating pornographic and vulgar information." The blocks were instituted by China's national office for Internet pornography crackdown and targeted at search results that contained unsavory content. The office also apparently asked Google to stop searching foreign sites.

Filtering keywords isn't new to them anyway.

Yes, they were already blocking "sensitive" results regarding democracy in China or the Tiananmen square protests - seems this has been extended to porn as well.

    Google-god is greater than China.
    NOthing can stop it's tentacles.

People in China will still find a way around thier censorship issues. They, just like other people in other country's, always find a way around the filters.

I wouldn't be surprised that people in the higher levels of the Chinese communist country get what-ever they want.

That includes mollycoddles, scrummage, scribbles, porn, oh and yes...more porn. What the masses want, is denied.
What the leaders want, they get.
    I wouldn't be surprised.

Stuff that is secret to the masses is meant to be kept secret.

Just like Saddam Hussein. He got what he wanted while the rest of the country's population got less.

So when they censor portions of the internet, it'll stop some of the general population in China, but those who want something bad enough, will find a way to get what they want.

Who knows, maybe they'll even 'sell' it of a sorts to those deprived. KInd of like the Black Market.

I am sure that it exists even in China.

+1; chinese surfers can already use proxies to access blocked sites. Freegate became shareware for users outside of China, as a matter of fact.

Google once allocated extra IPs to bypass the censorship, but these ended up blocked as well.

and in due time the censorship will be reduced, since china is increasingly connecting to the rest of the world, which goes directly against the fact that dictatorship & censorship are most efficient in closed/sealed off countries

same goes for 'western' countries & their governments too - they may use different methods but it comes down to the same thing - control

thats also one of the reasons we all (internet users) have to keep an eye out (and act when needed) on laws/regulations concerning internet to make sure no one succeeds in disrupting the net neutrality or imposing restrictions/control on its contents, since internet as a medium has shown a real potential considering freedom of information and alternative views access (unlike heavily corrupted/tainted media like newspapers/tv)
