True-HD 720p Blu-Ray Rips - Playable In Any DVD Player

Back in November we erroneously reported that the new Blu-Ray rips (BRRip and BDRip) are in Hi-Def (HD). In fact, these are in 720×400 (or similar resolution), which indeed qualifies them as superior to those regular 700 MB XviD codec releases - albeit they are not HD. Finally, however; there is a P2P release group that has become the first to produce XviD (*.avi) BRRips in true 720p HD @ 1280×720 resolution - beautiful picture quality and AC3 6-channel audio that will play back on any DivX/XviD compatible standalone home DVD player.

"NPW" is the group responsible for these next-generation BRRips, and for now the torrents can only be found on RevolutionTT.net. Hopefully everyone who needed an account found a way to get in during their recent Happy New Year open signups promotion.

Until now they just offer this six releases shown on FSF.

Let's see how they keep it up in future, but for sure a nice way to go for those who don't want to download the huge "normal" 720/1080p HD releases.

    Hi,
first of all. Most (all?) Xvid/DivX compatible DVD-Players will not play these rips because of the resolution.

Another thing is the quality. The rips are smaller than comparable x264 720p rips. x264 is the format that lets you reduce file size while keeping the quality comparable or better than Xvid/DivX. This is the other way around which leads to horrendous quality.

    Case in point:

    Hi,
I would not say that their releases are bad per se. They certainly do not have the picture quality you might expect from a rip with such specs. And the DVD-Player argument is mostly out the window as well. The rips are rather useless then.

If you want to see what a 720p rip can look like get a properly done x264 version.

An example: I ripped the first episode of BBC's Planet Earth from my BluRay. I encoded with x264 in 720p (size: single layer DVD). To get a comparable result quality-wise with DivX HD the encode had to be more than 2 gigabytes bigger. It still did not look as good as the x264 version.

    Regards
