After trying it out I'd dare to say so, but EC also has its own useful features...

    @ephemeron

too bad recuva has not helped me like you did, it never "sees" my deleted files. i found commercial applications are more useful in this. if want some suggestions, active@ undelete for casual recoveries or runtime's getdataback for heavy ones

I once lost everything in one partition; tried both tools but none would recover anything. WinHex could restore the allocation table and bring my files back to life, though.

you must be referring to the forensic edition of winhex, never tried though

i have the same experience, my whole drive could not be recognized because of the infamous unreadable sector 0. that was a dark time, my whole final project was there, without it i could not have graduated lol

i read through various articles, search for every recovery applications, tried almost anything, well.. not the very expensive commercial data recovery companies, and i mean anything to get the data back and in the end the one that saved me are a fridge and runtime's getdataback :)
the software is very powerful albeit very slow

after the incident, i also use hddregen on the drive and now it working again, yeah really, but i don't use it after that anyway

other useful application include testdisk that can recover and backup almost any file system information and it's free. really helpful to understand these applications when disaster struck and of course always do backups like i always do now

..and for ccleaner.. i only used it once and just sitting there collecting dusts lol

    Yes, that's right.

A fridge!? You mean putting the HDD inside one before attempting to recover your files? I once read about this in an eBook called "200 ways to revive a hard drive". Testimonials said it mostly worked to recover important data fast enough.

after the incident, i also use hddregen on the drive and now it working again, yeah really, but i don't use it after that anyway ...
Glad to hear that - the book also said that drives tend to die completely from 1 to 1½ hours after you take them out of the fridge.

yeah i know it's silly, because electronics hates water right? but well i'm desperate at that moment
and actually i have to wait a while for the condensed vapor on the drive to disappear before connecting it and do recoveries, didn't want to get electrocuted lol, so not have to be that hasty i believe

the drive is still well and alive but with some bad sectors on it, hddregen really fixes that bad sectors but not all of them

Those TuneUp and Spy Bot are freeware? Are they better than CCleaner?

I checked CCleaner and it's very good. It found a ton of old stuff in my system, removing almost 500Mb of trash.

As far as I know SpyBot SnD is freeware, while TuneUp Utilities isn't. SpyBot also focuses specifically on removing spyware, while TuneUp is more of an all-in-one suite. I haven't used the latter too much to say it's better or worse than CCL, but it does have a bunch of stuff. I'm personally fine with CCleaner
