Thread: Usenet Backbone and Provider Tree Map.

  1. #1

Post Usenet Backbone and Provider Tree Map.

Since my start using the Usenet, the backbone tree was a great resource to better understand where articles are. This pretty SVG had many updates and questioning, often being removed from public information places and becoming sort of hard to find.

So, I decided to create this thread to post it, and so that we can keep updating new versions of it, since it, even outdated, gives a very valuable view on the USP backbones infrastructure that is often used as a reference during conversations about the Usenet.

My objective is to provide this thread so that we can talk about this map and post newer versions of it.
There goes the 2024-03-31 version of the Backbones and Providers map.

If you have a more up to date version of this, please share!

As usual, nice work It is now possible to upload SVG images up to 2 MB in file size which will render on the browser by default (please confirm this is working properly), so I have updated your post accordingly.

    Also see https://whatsmyuse.net/.

It is not my work this time. This svg has been around for years, and was updated by different people. I just thought it was important to have it here and keep it alive here so we can find new versions or even maybe update it. (According to one backbone maintainer, even outdated, it is closer to reality than whatsmyuse.net).

Nice that you could make the SVG attached! Yes it's rendering just fine!

Ah, for some reason I thought the 2024 update was your doing, but after rereading the first post you never actually said that

Good, there used to be drama with browsers rendering SVGs as an XML document (because that's what they are) when asked to do it inline.

    Post 2025-01-30 Update

    I found a new update at usenet.rexum.space/tree

It oversimplified resellers in order to move them to a new page inside that site, so I personally find the old stile better and worth keeping (this file is useful offline), but the new version is still nice and more up to date.

there goes the new one, attached here. I hope this thread can become a "history" of these bacbone tree maps.

Well, to that effect, I have renamed the file in the first post and linked to a list of attachments that will update automatically with future uploads.

Any historically relevant (a.k.a. outdated) data is also welcome. I know this map has been a thing since at least 2011, but don't have any old copies of it on me, and information from that era can be fairly difficult to find due to purges on Reddit and Imgur.
