Not strictly related, but I suggest checking out Tiny11. It recently made headlines due to its low resource usage, and despite having given up on modified editions of Windows years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight and usable it is. The latest build even allows updates and language packs.

There's also a Tiny10 in case you'd rather not take Microsoft's latest offering at the moment.

In Apple's case both the hardware and software are mostly worth it, you just pay a vast extra to show everyone you think different

As an official member of the Apple Defense Force I feel like it's my duty to come to this thread and say that if you want fractional scaling of both fonts and UI at the level of the operating system you currently have no freaking choice but to buy Apple. After that you can just install homebrew or nix and use it as a glorified BSD distribution with access to some more specialized software if you need.

I suppose you already know about MacType?

Then again, the only scaling I use is 100%, and as for smoothing... none.

Nope. Does it do proper fractal scaling ? How does it handle the various windows toolkits ?

I don't know, but some people swear by it, so if you haven't actually tried it I suppose it's worth checking out.
