Outlast was a great game with lots of jumpscares, I really enjoyed this.
Outer Wilds scares the shit out of me. The only game I have bought and couldn't finish.

This part here was really scary for me. When that vertical door slowly opens up and you can hear the regenerator breathing.
I'm the type of guy who considers Blairswitch Project the scaries movie ever. If I get immersed it's over for me.
I've seen people online say RE2 is a lot scarier than RE4 but this moment alone made in ten times scarier for me.

The first game was already too much for me, only got as far as that plant where you're supposed to put poison in its water to kill it and get the item across the room. Then again, I probably wouldn't have been able to finish it without a guide anyway - emblems, crests, keys, gemstones, levers, passcodes... fortunately video playthroughs are a thing now.

Do you remember if you were playing with Chris or Jill? Chris would be the normal difficulty and Jill the easy one (some would say hard and normal respectively). What's is nice about RE1 is that you are not obligated to create the poison to throw in the roots of the plant, but if you do, the fight gets easier. If you play with Chris and the plant grabs and kills you it's game over, but with Jill, Barry will come to save you, this even makes changes to the endings of the game.
Regarding RE2 I remember one part that scared me the most was in the library when you are unaware investigating and the floor breaks and you fall.
I played Outlast 2 recently and it's pretty scary, specially in the beginning where you enter an isolated village and you see the locals retreating and hiding in the bushes looking at you.
it's hip to be square
Tried both, only being vaguely aware that the choice changed which events trigger and characters you meet. I remember just running around the dining room with Jill until the first zombie enters it on his own because it was too scary to trigger that cutscene and immediately head backI'm talking about this plant by the way, the one that can grab and kill you shows up far beyond the point where I gave up on the game.
Apparently there was a canceled Game Boy Color port that looks about 70% finished, and frankly amazing considering the hardware limitations.
