A surge protector is good advice for everything, not just computers. Be sure to buy a real one (single sockets and "protected" power strips are crap) that can handle the full load of what you'll be plugging (assume the VA rating is actually 80% of what's stated). And for those that have a fuse as an extra safeguard, buy spares because even under perfect conditions, those things will pop every few years, and you don't want that happening on a Sunday at 4 AM.
Some other good life advice: if your PSU has a voltage selector, make sure it's set correctly before turning it on
