Thread: Software Discussions

  1. #1

    Software Discussions

I'd like to propose this thread for listing all the best software in their category/class.
I'd also like ask a moderator to sticky this for others to easily find it.

I'll start with a very important piece of software in our every-day lives: driver installation.

    SnappyDrivers
All driver installers use, as the source of their drivers, two important driver makers: News | DriverPacks.net and DriverOff.net -
These people take drivers from manufacturers, extract them, get the files needed and repackages them to archives. Driver installers downloads these archives and gets the needed drivers from the packs.

SnappyDrivers is the only tool on the market that:
    • can be fully automated via command-line/powershell
    • is clean of adaware/crapware/any kind system modifications
    • portable
    • full-featured
    • free and open-source
    • written in C++ (meaning very fast)

Try it and you will see that is better than any other product.
If you do like it, help spread the word.
PS: I am not in any way affiliated with the developer but when I see a top-notch program I'd like for others to hear it.

    it's a no brainer...

    Notepad++

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License.

Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.
what? you don't code? that's no excuse not to use this as your default txt handler under windows!

colour coding! tabs! recent docs! speed! tiny os footprint!

    just get it! you'll see!

[this next app would be under the category of 'well being', i guess...]

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +

    f.lux

"software to make your life better"

Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?

Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.

    f.lux
f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

    https://justgetflux.com

essentially, this app controls the level of blue light emitted from you computer screen. if you don't understand the science behind it, blue light basically keeps you up at night, reducing your ability to sleep easily - it effectively creates havoc with your bodyclock over time. you think you don't need much sleep?

if you don't know about this, here's a couple of articles for you:

Blue light has a dark side - Harvard Health
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effect...hts_technology

this isn't pseudoscience, it's something very real that effects all computer and screen gadget users (phone etc).

the subject is something i take extremely seriously as i suffer from a condition directly linked to this issue.

f.lux is available on multiple desktop and mobile operating systems.

n.b. disable it if you are working on gfx at night, for obvious reasons!

I'll come back to this thread when I have more time to do a writeup of all the good programs I recommend. In the meantime, I'd like to say that f.lux is an absolute must if you use your computer at night, and a lighter alternative called redshift exists.

There are many for me and I can't live without their functionality. Let's see,

    Text editors:

    Vim - linux
    Leafpad - linux
    Notepad++ - Windows
    Brackets - Windows / Mac / Linux
    Sublime - Windows / Mac / Linux

Personally I use notepad++ mostly since it is the fastest on the startup and with opening files. But for code editing for long time mostly I use brackets. on linux vim and leafpad are used all the time.

    Screenshots & Screen recording:

    Snagit - Windows
    Camtasia - Windows

Snagit is one of the apps which I why I still use Windows instead of linux !

    Torrenting:

Vuze Extreme Mod - Windows / Mac / Linux

Really thanks to the great devs of this one, contributors and to sb-i for such amazing tool.

    Audio & Video Playback:

    VLC - Windows / Mac / Linux / Android
    dBpoweramp - Windows / Mac
    MPC-BE - Windows
    PotPlayer - Windows

    Connecting:

    mIRC - Windows
    Thunderbird - Windows / Mac / Linux

    Terminal Connection:

    SecureCRT - Windows / Mac / Linux

    Files Uploading:

    ShareX - Windows

ShareX is a free and open source program that lets you capture or record any area of your screen and share it with a single press of a key.

    Notepad2-mod
Notepad++ is the best text editor in Windows but Notepad2-mod is a lot lighter and easier to use for small modifications.

A warning to those using Snappy Drivers.
Needless to say, I wasn't impressed and neither were our end users. SDI
is advertised as a free, open source application. It has never contained
any malware. When I discovered this was going on behind my back and
realised I was powerless to do anything about it, I forked the project
    and set up a
new web site to continue Snappy Driver Installer in the tradition
in which it was meant to be. So, to
answer your question, Snappy Driver Installer Origin, the web site
you are now reading, is the original Snappy Driver Installer as it
    always was and will
continue to be. The old project known as Snappy Driver Installer
is no longer in the hands of the
original developers and is not safe to use.
So, the original SDI will eventually contain malware.
Use only Snappy Drivers origin from here Snappy Driver Installer - Install and Update Drivers for Free

Damn these numbskulls. Everytime something is working fine, somebody decides to kill it.
