Most would tell you the pros and cons of each and you should read more a bit about each one and what every language could do and usage of each programming/scripting language. But as a very quick choice, these days, python popularity, support and usage are rising.

PHP however is very popular and widely used to you might want to start selecting here, also PHP is been there solid for long time. But python is scripting language and programming language as well :). So, pick one, and get advanced.

for learning i'd tend to php. simply because that's closer to c and if you wanna get more serious at some point there's no way around c.

How is that? I wouldn't think of PHP when it comes to C, but maybe you can proof me wrong?

As for starting, I'd suggest python, mainly because it's quite easy and "forces" you to write more "structured" code.
In the end it mainly depends on what you're trying to accomplish anyways.

As do others. I'd personally rather think of Java, but that's just my experience.

    A more general advice:

Don't focus too much on a particular language, as a language is just a tool.

Better make yourself familiar with some basic concepts and problems, such as:

    • programming paradigms
    • concurrency
    • race conditions
    • deadlocks
    • (portability)
    • ...

Think about web development and its new technologies
for desktop Java, C++/Qt and C# will be more than enough.

to answer that more precisely, the first 2 are scripting languages and the rest is database stuff. so the first thing you have to decide is whether you wanna get into programming or rather databases.

This brings me to the first thing I thought upon reading the first post - IT isn't just those two. There is also networking and security (which pretty much combines everything).
