Thread: What to do with large ammount of computers?

    What to do with large ammount of computers?

    At my current workplace I have lots of machines at my disposal (laptops, desktops, l2 and l3 networking equipment, the works...). I'd like to hear some thoughts about what to build/do with them. I'd hate to lose such an oppurtunity as I'll never come across anything like this at home.
    I'm looking for: project ideas, learning oppurtunities.

    thank you

    I am in a similar situation, and the only idea I've come up with so far is borrowing a computer with a PCIe graphics card to crack wireless passwords. When something breaks I can just take a replacement, which is great, but otherwise I haven't found much use for the hardware pool (which doesn't mean there isn't).

    Selling them isn't a bad idea, except that selling things that are not your own is wrong and can get you in trouble, so it is a bad idea.

    They let you do anything. Except, of course, you do not steal/sell them.

    Sell them to suckers and buy the latest thing.
    Read above and shut up.

    I didn't ask you guys for morality concers, just ideas. Now, either think or get off this thread.

    bitcoin mining ))
    Maybe, but I'm not looking to get rich here. Just trying to learn some stuff I could not on my own.

    however, own morality concerns will steer own decisions on what idea to take or implement (or what idea to suggest in the first place)

    so here's some thoughts:
    - whatever project you try, you'll learn something from it
    - this goes even for repeating things over and over again
    - this goes even for seemingly useless activities

    - since all that idle hardware may be viewed as wasted potential collecting dust, try to find a way to use it in order to improve the company in some way or to solve some problem or inefficiency that the company has - so in a way both the employer and the employee benefit from the activities

    I don't like cheap stuff because it breaks faster and it does not perform best to its ability.
    I said before, and with risk of repeating myself: cost is irrelevant as long as it performs as advertised.

    What's so wrong with that?
    I also don't like this sarcasm.

    Be nice or shut up.
    I was, read the first post of thread. Nothing short of respect and politeness.

    Here's some I hope you like
    * game server (full game experience to devices such as smartphone/tablet)
    * media server
    * distributed apps server (stream to less powerful devices ie full Windows desktop, MS Office, VMWare on a smartphone or tablet). Increase office/home productivity (my fav)
    * distributed x265 video encoding
    * or pull apart what you need and build monster gaming machine with 20 CPUs and 20 video cards

    Well, not that rentable any more. He would need to connect them all to a mining pool all together and then he still has no chance against the asics. Even if he joins Cloudmining pools with that equipement he will just produce a shitload of heat and no outcome :-)

    And the Hardware will die after a short time. when they run on 100% 24/7.

    I can't think of an app that will work streamed, and also one that I might actually need.

    I would consider it but I don't rip movies anymore. There used to be a time when my computer was running day and night, but now...
