Thread: The Android Thread

  1. #106
I'm experiencing an issue: my moto e with cyanogen does not update the files on system partition and sd card. I see one set of files (new) on android and a whole different set (older files) on MTP in windows. The MTP on weindows just never gets updated, the files are there even when the folder is empty on android (es explorer).

The android device is rooted and I hope this is not the cause of this. I have read online that it could be because MTP cannot read root files, only user files.
Does anyone has a workaround? Tips, experience, anything?

    Thank you

Hi, I have a 2013 Moto X, 1st gen. Installed the latest CM 13 before they ceased development and my GPS doesn't work anymore

It can spot where I am with location ON, but navigation won't work, even with other softwares.

Already tried fastboot erase modemst1 and 2, anyone had this?

I may have found a temporary sollution: after a android restart the new files show up in MTP. Probably needs to be restart every so often?

It does, and so do MAPS.ME and OsmAnd~, although I found the latter to be very slow in comparison with the other two. HERE WeGo has 3D buildings for most of my city, which is a nice touch, but the maps in MAPS.ME seem more complete, to the point of including the location of benches on parks

Lineage OS is the new CyanogenMod. You may want to try that.

What is a good text editor for Android? I currently use QuickEdit but my text files are not displayed correctly in it. QuickEdit does not respect tab character or multiple spaces.

My new cell phone came bundled with it, I only tested for reading some docs so far and it did the job well, fast and no errors.

How much space does it take? I know the full suite installer is about 90MB.

I looked up com.microsoft.office.officehub in ApkPure, and in the description I found something worth mentioning:

    • Try the new Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps! Now available for Android tablets and phones in the Google Play store. These new apps are recommended for tablets and phones running Android OS 4.4 and up. http://aka.ms/worda, http://aka.ms/excela, http://aka.ms/ppta
    • Office Mobile is not recommended for Android OS 4.4 and up.

OMG!! It doesn't even fit on my phone's internal storage.
I'll have to come up with a way to install it though, it's actually the best when compared to wps and open office.

Surely there's a way to install it on your SD card? I mean, my 2009 fake iPhone had that feature (but internal storage was just 5 MB, which made it pretty mandatory).

Here's my notes on the mcirosoft office apk:
    - 90MB apk installer with 350MB installed size (appears as office suite and not as standalone Word/powerpoint/Excel)
    - does not support doc, xls and ppt (2003 formats)
    - afaik it does not contain any hidden process in the os and it seems ok

Now I have to fix that 2003- format issue. And this is another reason why ms employees are cretins.

I recently had to repurpose a Verizon XT1528 (Moto E) phone as a portable media player. This model has a locked bootloader, so no custom ROMs are available, and achieving even temporary root access is very hard. However, after removing "Motorola Device Policy" from Device Administrators and installing an alternate launcher and keyboard, running the following script in the ADB shell achieved massive debloating.

`pm uninstall --user 0' works wonders to kill preinstalled apps, even those that can't be disabled or removed, and does not require root. However, it doesn't actually delete them, and can't be undone without a factory reset.

I tried the recently-released Android-x86 8.1. I expected low performance and little usability because that's exactly what I'd seen in previous versions. As it turns out, my mistake all this time was running it under VMware, because there is no support for the virtual graphics adapter yet.

I gave it a second chance on physical hardware and was very impressed by the results. Everything was fast and fluid, even with several apps open. All devices other than the touchpad worked correctly. This on a Celeron laptop with 4 GB of RAM.

    Worth keeping in mind
