Yes, however that doesn't work on all devices. Some of them are pretty much stuck on locked. The xperia t for one can't be unlocked without the sony code, no workarounds found as of yet. That being said, most devices are easy to unlock, just gotta be careful when buying one and do your research first.

Also remember that rooting and flashing voids your warranty. While it was unnecessary, I actually waited a year before unlocking my bootloader just because I wanted to be super sure the device was fine :/

My problem with phones such as google nexus is that I may not even use 50% of it's full capability. I mostly need it for internet browsing & email, music and some videos.
I don't play games, I don't use facebook... Whenever I'm online I try to learn as much stuff as possible. So, basically this phone's function will be office only.

For these types of requirements, won't a nexus be overkill?

I don't play games nor use facebook either, still happy i got a phone with a bit of power though. It pretty much ensures you that it will be decent for more than a year.
Phones on the lower end will mostly work well now, but soon be crippled by newer apps that just get heavier and heavier.

I got a new calendar app the other day which really looks spiffy, but it takes some cpu to make it flow. If you don't really care about such things, then yeah it might be overkill. Otherwise a nexus might be a good investment (seeing the hardware you're getting for that price)

What is it with these phones and no card slots? They can make 400$ phones and not have 5$ to add a small slot connector?

It's a size thing mostly. Every manufacturer is e-peening over the fact how small/slim their phones are. Adding a slot adds a lot of thickness :(

Sorry it's not really an option for you, but I really couldn't be happier after getting a 2GB / month abo from work I hardly use any storage at all and just stream. Google is kind of known for having the "everything in the cloud" mindset, so that might be the reason.

Well, I want to buy that nexus but I'm affraid I won't have enough money for it.
For what I've read, nexus phones have pure android. Why would that matter? I mean if you are going to jailbreak it anyway and change the OS, won't that make it redundant?

And let's say you don't jailbreak, the pure android has less features than any other android on the market.

It's not the pureness that matters. The drivers for nexus machines are published openly by google quickly after each release. That makes it a very easy device to create custom roms for. Manu's like Samsung only publish the bare minimum of sources, making it much harder to create a stable rom for, since the kernels for these devices are often hacked together, rather than a pure original kernel.

Besides that, google also delivers updates long after others and much quicker.

Nexus 6 is amazing though. ~.~ I want. If you wait 6 months it will be half of that, I think. (Like previous nexus)
It's not out yet, though. Pre-order soon.

Might pick up a cheapo nexus 5 instead. Will have to think about it

nexus 6 is like a big fuckin brick.. 6 inches.. I mean seriously? Y not make it 21 inch Led TV I don't think so that rates will go down to half... Yes specs are awesome no doubt but price and screen size are the major downfall..

I like big. There's nothing wrong with big. Except big prices. My only concern is that the extra power in the hardware is going to be consumed by the extra pixels on the screen.

I have a 4.7 inch right now, and would definitely want a bigger one for my next purchase.

I've been using my Moto E since 2014, when I bought it. It is a very good phone and has been very reliable but time has come for a new phone. I need some help picking one.
Here is what I am insterested in:
    • flash to custom android mod
    • very good camera
    • OK-ish performance

I do not intend on playing games or open 30 apps at once. The camera requirement is because I work in a very technical environment and need to take pictures of serial numbers, passwords, etc and so the pictures need to be good and clear.

Since, Cyanogen went downhill, I'd also like to hear opinions on which android mod is the best as of this moment.

    Thank you so much.
