but that's the only serious option. simply because linux for desktop use is pretty much ignored by almost all major software vendors.

    ^That
And while I know it's not all that important, I feel like most linux ui's are pretty shitty. Not all of them.. just most. I have yet to see a linux alternative come up with a better UI (obv not counting OS X here, since they win all)

Just one can be counted KDE, but don't forget that less graphical UI means light-weight system that supports a low level PC .
I want to give a hackintosh a try on PC.

I wouldn't, gives me too many headaches.

True, sadly. But that's not a good reason to stop me though.
I can easily fire up a virtual machine with windows and be done with it.

Linux's strong point isn't in the UI. I couln't care less about it as I mostly use the terminal.

A recent ubuntu is anything but lightweight, though. My shitty old laptop has more issues running it smoothly than windows 7/8 just because it is so heavy. But even with a graphically heavy UI, a lot of the screen designs (mostly in third party apps) seem to be made in the year 1993.

give xfce a try or the classics like windowmaker or afterstep. as a rule of thumb you can rule out everything that works with gtk2 if you're looking for performance and moderate system load

i had my laptop running xubuntu as ubuntu was too heavy. while xfce is blazing fast, it does look "meh", though, in comparison.

yeah but, the discussion started with linux being lightweight and looking better. Was just trying to prove that on older hardware, this is not the case per se
