i'll probably check it out, the rock has enough charisma to carry a movie as a lead character, but not if he is left 'on his own' (as happened in a number of his movies)
btw, you're confusing the general decline of f&f (too many sequels, as expected) with the rock entering the series (just compare his acting/delivery/attitude with the monotonous/bored diesel or still? nervous walker)

also, for good movies with the rock see:

Fast Five (2011) a short-lasting infusion of fresh blood into the franchise
Race to Witch Mountain (2009) bearable, more family oriented, lesser adventure
    Gridiron Gang (2006) strong drama
Doom (2005) bearable, lesser action movie
    The Rundown (2003) fun thriller/adventure
The Scorpion King (2002) bearable if you can handle the silliness (and its still better than any of 'the mummy' movies from which it originated)

note: this movie already had an early (pretty bad) copycat:

though the title was: The Legend of Hercules (2014)

hehe 'race to witch mountain' was primarily a light comedy for kids/family with elements of SF/adventure, not serious or big-budget stuff, the special effects were cheap, the acting shaky, but there was a good attitude/feeling going on, thus it fared better than some and got included in the list

as for his other more recent action/thriller oriented movies like: Faster, Snitch, G.I. Joe, Pain & Gain, F&F6, they all had some serious problems that made them sink down to an unflattering mediocre recyclable level

the rock as tooth fairy = lol, that was funny without even trying
martin lawrence as tooth fairy = probably annoying, even more so if he tried hard(er)
btw, lawrence did only 1 watchable movie, namely Big Momma's House (2000), the rest of his more famous roles or movies are way overrated (like any of the 'bad boys' stuff)

no, the next stage was his 12 labors (as in crossing the 12 signs of the zodiac), don't think he was paid with money for those

notice that during this time he never was anything else but hercules, his essence (the objective) never changed - what changed was his perception of his own role, his image of himself, his subjective view - you could call him confused or misguided hercules during his formative years, but the core of the matter is that he was still hercules at every single stage of his existence/life

also, the point of justice is to be justice at all times, not only when we think something is just or when we subjectively assess that justice was done - thats what objective justice is: it is being done all the time, every time, every single moment in time, for any & every single being (in time), aka karmic justice - only a subjective view of justice may ignorantly claim how justice is done exclusively in what is thought of as good events or good outcomes or good thoughts/deeds/people/...

    (theoretical) examples:
    - the smell of roses is an enjoyable experience, you feel good (about it), justice was done by this event
    - getting high on a potion made of rose leaves/ingredients - is an ecstatic experience, justice was done by this event
    - getting pricked by a rose thorn - is not an enjoyable experience, you don't feel good (about it), justice was done by this event too
    - getting pricked by a poisoned rose thorn and dying in agony after many days - is a horrible experience, justice was done even by this event
    - the image of roses while you're not directly looking at them - a neutral experience, justice was done by this event as well

    or, respectively:
    - good
    - extremely good
    - bad
    - extremely bad
    - neutral

your task is to figure out how all of these different experiences can still represent the same essential quality (of justice or justice being done), the objective within

back to the movie with some comments:

    other silly things:
    - soldier replies: yes sir! to hercules (wrong era)
    - armies not knowing where their enemies are (lets just march wherever?)
    - hercules using the f-word (wrong era, lame)
    - the rock and his (jesus?) haircut or his bowlegged walk (not from riding horses, but weight-lifting benches?)
    - the animal (lame final fight scene)
    - weak cgi (better than 300 lols though)

    other good things:
    - the rock (charisma), but he looked old and tired, not nearly as legendary as (it would be) appropriate
    - displays of supernatural power, but too few and far between, not nearly epic enough

hollywood at its worst, nevertheless some interesting conclusions can be made - like, how hercules would look like from a subjective perspective that does not allow for mythical/legendary beliefs (above average but still ordinary) or how things would look like without catching the metaphorical meaning of hercules and his actions/life (pretty ordinary/superficial) - because, regardless of whether there was a (historical) hercules or not, his story has primarily a metaphorical significance or a deeper meaning

However, they quickly gloss over those monsters in the first few minutes, then say "this is the story of the real Hercules," and the movie doesn't contain any Gods, magic, mythological beasts, or demi gods. Instead, the movie says there was only a man, a mercenary, who happen to have people spread myths and legends. That he also was never alone, but pretty much always had the backing of his friends in battle.
the quick run-through those labors was very amateurish
making him more ordinary gets closer to current movie trends (heros/superheros reduced to almost ordinary individuals, what if they were more like everyone else), but loses much regarding expectations of epic battles or accomplishments

He also has a whole team assembled (/facepalm) in which his nephew (Iolaos) is the PR guy, promoting stories about Hercules being a demi-God, just to advertise him enough to get him hired. There is also a prophet in the team who never predicts anything in an absolute manner, only says things like "the Gods are not telling me...", and even if he does, he is later proved to be wrong.

So is he a demi-God? The movie doesn't say for sure, but everything suggests that he's not. The ending of the movie is not only very annoying and uninformative, but also tries to be educative-moral, saying "anybody can be a hero if he believes in himself" or a similar crap line. (/vomit)
he becomes almost like an employee (mercenary) of some company (king/kingdom), getting paid for the job (gold/money), being a team leader, they even have marketing (the funny PR guy), advertisements (war tales)

the (only human) prophet somewhat reminds of fortune tellers (nowadays), sees things but cannot interpret them with more certainty/accuracy/understanding until post-factum, fails regarding own death (advertizing free will)

that last moral is not so erroneous as it may seem: for, you are that what you believe to be (subjective view), things around you are that what you think they are,... - as time passes by, your subjective view changes and you notice how things are not quite or not even nearly as you previously thought (or believed), examples:

    - would you say that a factory worker thinks of himself as 'a factory worker' or a king thinks of himself as 'a king'? they believe it too, act that way pretty much every single day - when in fact, what they are doing is role-playing, ie. they believe that they are the role they play! but there's more...
    - would you say they believe they are humans of 'flesh and blood'? when in fact, their body is simply a vessel, ie. they believe that they are the body they inhabit! but there's more...
    - remember that stuff about 'being happy' - if you (really) believe that you are, you (really) will be - the same as: be happy/content with what you had/have/will have - but there's more... and further revelations await...

and back on topic for the conclusion: 3 hercules movies this year, not one (particularly) worth mentioning...though this one, as weak as it may be, is still the best one (in terms of entertainment)

Just watched it and think it was a total disappointment. I hate when the "best" scenes are compiled into the trailer. When I watched the trailer and saw those big creatures, i.e. the giant lion, the giant boar and the mythological hydra, I was hoping to see some elaborate fighting scenes with Hercules and them, and instead I get flashes of these characters just like in the bloody trailer.
    it's hip to be square
