I'm having hard disk trouble again. My desktop computer froze today, and when forcibly rebooting it, one of my SATA disks (the biggest one) would not be detected by the BIOS, let alone the operating system.
Can disks even fail like that? The SMART on this one was OK as of a month ago (there were a few thousand UltraDMA CRC errors, but those were caused by the shitty add-on card I had it hooked on in the past; the sorrow it inflicted is well-documented here). Temperature may be a factor, but all the other ones are at 40° C, and they have endured many 35-plus degrees summer days without a hitch. Maybe the data cable said "enough" - it's a really old one, from when they didn't have the metal clip to keep them fixed in-place.
Anyway, I'm taking it to my workplace tomorrow (it's going to be a quiet day, as only students having to do "previous" exams will attend) and hopefully will work out the cause.
PS: no backups for this one, and I have a ton of stuff within... I've been meaning to make an image for months now, but always got lazy...

I hope it works out! I know when my external hdd stopped working a few years back, with all my music on it! Almost gave me a heart attack! Luckily for me it was just fault case and after getting new one, worked like a charm! Still does!

I know that feeling my external hdd stopped working last year got some stuff back by using a recovery program but a lot of my data was lost

I would try a different cable. If it still freezes, try a dignostic program like HDTune and post an error scan (non-quick).
I've had that issue with a WD Green a few times. After rebooting a couple of times, it usually hooks back up and it just works as if nothing has happened.... SMART says it's completely fine too. So fucking weird. It's not the port or cable either.
Fucking ghosts xD It gets haunted like once a month.
I don't keep important stuff on there, but for now it just seems like it's working...

The good news is that the disk is fine. I tried it in my work computer, ran several surface scans and CHKDSK, and everything is okay.
The bad news is that in the process of making a backup (in case this happens again and the disk isn't OK), I found that the Toshiba Canvio disk I got as an advance birthday gift some weeks ago is... poisoned with this "energy saving" disease. Same problem I faced last year with 2.5" Western Digital disks, except there is no proper solution, because turning off APM and idle timeouts does nothing, and the Toshiba Sleep Removal Tool doesn't work with this model.
I wrote a batch file that writes the current time to a file every three minutes to prevent the disk from going to sleep, but that's a cheap trick and will only work under Windows.
An extra TB is fine, but I don't think I see myself using this drive a lot

The good news is that it got PHP, MySQL and Chamilo working on the server, when all documentation said it's not possible and/or a Linux netbook should be used.

Is it true that no matter what router you have it will always give you problems when comes to internet connection? That's what my ISP service guy told me yesterday. I called two days ago, because my TP-Link is dropping my WiFi for some reason, and I need to manually turn off and on again. Basically he just looked something under options, clicked a few things, saved and asked me if I'm using bittorrent. I said of course, and he goes like thats the reason. Too many connections. And he said no matter what router I buy it will be the same. I somehow have hard time believing this.
While some can handle more load than others, he is correct in that all routers will eventually budge if you open too many connections, due to the NAT table becoming full.
In this age of seedboxes and high-speed Internet, you won't need more than 100 connections to use BitTorrent without problems. You have 1 Mbps if I remember correctly, so less than half of that would be enough.
