this is called vanishing point, when objects appear smaller as they move away from your position, not a proof of curvature

this has been used as a proof favoring the flat earth concept - by using cameras with a powerful zoom it can be shown that distant objects which seem to vanish when viewed with bare eyes or with binoculars, are still visible, ie. haven't gone beneath the horizon, thus disproving curvature

another example is viewing far away mountains or skyscrapers that ought to be invisible according to curvature calculations, but are again viewable with a more powerful zoom

the thing is, God revealed information about the Earth via his qualified representatives (saintly persons), but people sometimes prefer to accept other interpretations for various reasons - the main characteristic of such revealed information, apart from truthfulness, is stability, meaning: once revealed, even after thousands of years of technological and scientific progress, it cannot be disproved (at least not in any honest way) nor does it become obsolete, which is very reassuring to the followers, to keep their faith, relying on trustworthy sources of knowledge

Yeah, every time there's a scandal like this, it's used to push some hidden agenda. See Australia and their CP filter which has now been "extended" to block file sharing sites and other stuff their government doesn't like. The best part is that this tactic is pretty effective, because we want to protect children here, how could anyone be against that?
