Some hours after the movie, we all went to this bar which had a "happy hour" where you could get two drinks for the price of one (and contrary to what its name may indicate, said hour actually lasted 240 minutes). I only had a few Cokes as I don't drink alcohol, but my oh my, what a load of fun the others were... it was just like in the movies, except for the part where someone does something really stupid and police have to be called, thankfully.

The year-end party was today, and as it turns out, not attending meant getting a discount I already planned to go before learning fun was mandatory, but my friends weren't. So while they did it only to dodge the discount and perhaps get some fresh air (I knew more people there than they did, which should speak for itself), we did have some fun, and since none of them actually wanted the Christmas boxes, I ended up hauling four of them back home.

The smell of success is in the air

Have any one you ever had a corrupt file even though the checksums match (CRC, MD5 and SHA-1)?
I'm having an issue with a file that my collegues say is corrupted but the cheksums match, it doesn't make any sense.

checksums were made while the file was already corrupt?

you're using different software to access the file (older versions may report corruption)?

Ashamed to admit it but, yes. I had checked it with an already corrupted checksum. It was an Windows 8.1 ISO which I was sure it was correct.

CRC32 is simplistic enough for different files to get the same checksum both via random corruption and deliberate manipulation (i.e. it can and does happen). MD5 has vulnerabilities that allow different inputs to map to the same hash.

SHA-1 is pretty secure, but in theory also vulnerable to attacks, which is why its usage is being phased out for security certificates.

Both MD5 and SHA-1, however, remain good for checking the integrity of a download, because getting a hash collision through unintentional corruption is an statistical improbability. I use the latter to verify all my backups.

Are you guys doing anything special this year for Christmas and New Year?
How about some giveaway? Or how about a share-away (sharing a very rare account with someone special )

The problem with these are that all year we have given invites --it's been done to death. How about something different.

The problem is also that I have very little to give away (or share) and I feel the same is true for most others

Now, whenever I speak those words, I feel like my old self.

My motto used to be "hope for the best and prepare for the worst". I don't know what it is now.

hope alone can work but it is a very slow process, for better results additional action or effort or intention is required
preparing for the worst is overkill, preparing for what is reasonable makes more sense

it could be said that if you prepare for the worst, you're expecting it, believing in it and may eventually experience it (according to the proverbs 'be careful what you wish for, you just might get it' or 'you are the company you keep'), its like setting yourself up to have the experience

also, there are always exceptions to the rule, depending on the conditions at hand

I used to have tyhat one too, gave it up when it caused more harm than good.
By expecting the worst draws your attention to worse --makes the the worst case scenario more likely to appear.
