well, imdb top 250 is far from impressive, once you go through it, the reaction is: 'meh, thats it?' (roughly a third is well done, the rest ranges from average to bad)
of those RT's top 100 some 20-30 movies aren't listed in imdb's top 250, though judging from the titles they are probably very high on imdb's list as well, so these two lists aren't that different really:
    - imdb = mainstream choice
    - RT = mostly mainstream with some indie twist added (casual assessment)

It's mostly about watching something new that otherwise I would not have watched. Forcing myself to go through the entire top 250, I've actually watched quite a few movies that unexpectedly blew my mind. I also prefer watching a movie without knowing what it is going to be about. Blindly following the list allows me to do so. I've read through quite a few lists, and so far imdb's is still the best one. So for lack of a better one, I'll just stick with what I'm doing so far. I don't really think there is a much better list out there, as that would make it far too personal. (e.g. while you may only like 50 movies in the top 250, someone else might actually like 200 movies of the list). I don't understand either how stuff like Cassablanca gets up there so high, but for instance, 12 angry men is a movie I personally wouldn't have watched on my own and was very surprised about.

I somehow keep getting the feeling though that you perhaps put the movies you watch on a bit of a crooked scale. I have yet to see you very enthusiastic about a movie as of yet. Not to be a troll either but, reading through your post at the top 10 thread, I really don't understand why you think top 250 is mediocre while you list something like aliens vs predator in your top 10...

Go through the lists again though, RT's top 100 is completely a different "genre?" than imdb. They don't match up at all

PS: Who's using trakt.tv here? I need more friend on there

    @Sazzy:

I also prefer watching a movie without knowing what it is going to be about.
i don't mind spoilers one bit, in fact it makes the weeding-out process more manageable (yes, even in the age of downloading)

I don't understand either how stuff like Cassablanca gets up there so high
classic in its own time/age/genre, seems every age needs a few representatives in the top-all-time list, including those of amateurish filmmaking (pre 30s/40s or so) or overrated filmmaking (post 2005 or so)

Forcing myself to go through the entire top 250, I've actually watched quite a few movies that unexpectedly blew my mind.
...I have yet to see you very enthusiastic about a movie as of yet
reasons for that would be: i have already seen a sizable chunk of movies 'worth watching', the current industry output is way below some previously set standards (the only actual advancement lately is cgi and 3D gimmicks), the future of such entertainment doesn't look promising,... - seems to me none of these merit an increased enthusiasm
finally, its only entertainment, nothing particularly deep or insightful about it (on the contrary) and no number of lists or reviews can or will change that

I somehow keep getting the feeling though that you perhaps put the movies you watch on a bit of a crooked scale.
...I really don't understand why you think top 250 is mediocre while you list something like aliens vs predator in your top 10...
don't we all? hence: personal opinion
as for the other one, simple: i enjoy AvP (even though its obviously lacking in quality) more than some pretentious 'masterpiece' (even though it may obviously have an excess of, say, style or symbolism or whatever else may rank as 'impressive' per mainstream opinion makers)

Go through the lists again though, RT's top 100 is completely a different "genre?" than imdb. They don't match up at all
if you're referring to mere movie placement/ranking/numbers, there's much variation
if you're referring to the kind of movies listed & their contents, they are very close to each other

The issue with spoilers is that they're often the best parts of the movie. Knowing too much in advance is likely to dumb down the experience. First impressions matter (even though I'd rather not have it that way) and they tend to be a lot better when it's a full surprise. I know it's a shitty reason and i get to sit through a lot of shit because of it. But esp when going to the theater, I'd like to know as little as possible, yet just enough to know i want to pay the fee for it.

but hey, you're right. Current industry just sucks and is way too gimmicky.

Of course we all have a crooked scale in some way due to personal opinion. But I try to keep my scale crooked enough so even with the current gimmicky industry i can place at least a few in the "good" section.

Hey hellman, did you watch that movie I recommended you a few weaks back?
I'm watching it everyday. I love that day and age where people still read books, computer did not have such an influence of us as nowadays, school was boring, as today but students were serios about their future.
