also (intentionally) to influence the viewers, creating/fortifying/supporting on-going depression/hopelessness/helplessness/fear/anxiety, since desperate people will believe anything if it seems like a way out of their situation (or state of mind), ie. they become easy prey for various manipulative schemes/systems or manipulators/saviors ('saving' is another very common current movie theme) as they can't think straight due to their disturbed emotional/mental state - if everything is so dark, even a 'crumb' of light looks like a major improvement (for example, political parties deal in maximizing perceived gains, whereas what they really offer are crumbs, often not even aimed towards improvement)
