Yea I know! Looks like every last book in series needs to be split in two movies in hollywood??
It's because everyone always whines they leave out too much from the books because of the time frame (esp lotr). I know because I am one of those people
And they're right, it sucks when important stuff gets left out. That's why I'm really enjoying the hobbit so far.

I would say the case with The Hobbit is a little bit different. Whereas on The Lord of The Rings you have 3 big volumes to be squeezed through 3 films (long ones), on The Hobbit you have one single volume not so thick that was spread through 3 films (kind of long ones too). So in the latter they have had to invent/create a lot of things.
