Smile I got my first job today!

Back in late November of last year, I signed up at a couple of job search sites and sent a bunch of CVs so that I could make some money this summer, instead of just posting in forums and playing videogames. Some companies replied back, and one of them actually went all the way through and employed me. As the title suggests, I started right today. Working hours are from 9am to 6pm with a one-hour lunch break at one o'clock.

The actual job is having to repair printers and notebooks, sometimes desktop systems. Not exactly the creme-de-la-creme of IT... but it's something, and okay for an entry-level job, I think. And by reading the assigned material and tinkering with hardware I can learn new things, which is always nice.

    The perks:
    • there's an Internet connection, naturally. Heavily firewalled, but I will work on that.
    • my co-workers seem cool, the atmosphere is nice. They even let you play music.
    • FREE COFFEE MACHINE!!!!!!111111 :-D
    • weekends are my days off.

Today there wasn't much for me to do, since I was completely new. They took me around the place and told me what I was supposed to do. Then I was given an installable HP training course to learn the fundamentals of laser printing - how the different internal components on the printer and cartridges work. (Yay, studying!)

Oh, and here are a few pictures of the office:

    Cool
Grz to your first real job, hoping you enjoy it. Hope you wont get bored with the time and learn something.
Your work field seems interesting, laser-printers are quite fascinating things if you go in detail.
Excited to hear how it goes on

Congrats anon! I'd take Hardware job over Software anytime. I just love the smell of PCB in the morning, Sandwiches wrapped in anti-static bags. lol I just love tinkering, baked my GTX 670 to work again, yep oven toaster style. But I guess it's personal preference, others just love programming memorizing commands and stuff, just not much into that. But seeing your photos with boxes of hardware just waiting for you to tinker with. ooh... I'm jealous. Might not be wonderland like working for Google, Apple or Microsoft but that job is decent and you're doing real work instead of just sitting around playing paper basketball. lol (you are working right?) So again congratulations.

Remember what Yoda said "do or do not there is no try" do your job well or don't do it at all.

    Congrats!!

PS: Would be my favourite job, no working on week-end, good hours with 1 hour of lunch time and with music. You have a first job better than all the jobs I had and have.

Thank you guys, I appreciate all the good comments.

ch3ater.p3t3r, I deal with software much better than with hardware, but I'm seeing this as a good opportunity to strengthen my knowledge and become proficient in both areas.

yoco, the workload so far seems to be enough for me to be able to post when I get there, and then keep an eye on the forum from time to time. I just need to see how to deal with the firewall (don't want the IT guys to snoop in my posting ) and then we're good.

Neo26, that doesn't sound like you had a good experience?

supermarrioh, I will let you know; on an unrelated note I didn't forget about your PM, I should reply soon.

Congrats man, that's really awesome, I don't know if you have studies on the IT area but that's really great and a step forward in a possible career. I'm also eager to get a job since I'm near finishing my degree in computer science.

Wish you all the best and keep us posted on what you're doing.

Beware of exploding printers, this has been a known issue for long and has brought trouble to many people who repair equipments of the sort

I was going to take that career initially, but the amount of hard math required to get in was too damn much for me. What I know about IT, I learned mostly informally, and through personal experience. This very forum taught me quite a bunch of things.

Oh, and exploding printers? I will try to be careful

Congratulations!, this is a good start job actually, and also without degree (some companies just ask for the heck of it, certificates are meaningless anyway and companies know that) I hope the pay is good and enough for at least the transportation..moving on:

Try to enjoy every bit it :), the feeling of being useful is priceless :), a tip of enterprise work:

1- don't push yourself too far or 'exalted' (Thanks T-I) members of the office will rely on you a lot :wlol:: why should I care about the printer, anon will fix it fast hehe, /opens the printer's cover violently, /drags paper from the printer while it's printing for the lulz.
2- try to snoop in an innocent way into other's work so you'll learn (something/what they do) and eventually replace them when they make trouble with the manager hehe.
3- never bring coffee to others, joke as: 'bring it yourself', or you'll be the coffee man!
4- (obviously) act as being hardworking when the admin is around and/or his supervisors, sadly, you need to act a bit in life, because honest "undocumented"/unseen work isn't written on paper/acknowledged.

    Congrats, again
