    LOL.

.....Father and son McClane must work together to keep each other alive and keep the world safe for democracy.
Ok. That's just a tad too much. LOL.

John McClane has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time
actually, its the other way around (he prevailed, did he not?)

with the skills and attitude to always be the last man standing
these were enough to challenge the opponents, the last part is your friendly scriptwriter's intervention

making him enemy #1 for terrorists the world over.
nonsense, more correctly: making 'his turf' a (too) risky area for their (future) actions

Now, McClane faces his greatest challenge ever,
regardless of the hollywood tendency to make every next challenge (ridiculously) bigger/tougher, it could be said that every next challenge one faces is the greatest at that particular time (simply because it hasn't been dealt with yet, ie. the outcome is still uncertain)

    when his estranged son
not again since its not enough that they face formidable opponents, not to mention that the viewers are desensitized to dysfunctional families, subconsciously modelling their own behavior according to this movie pattern (aka influence or rubbing-off or as entertainment bigwigs like to bolster: creating a culture, via fictional role-model characters/behavior/situations/stories)

caught up in the daring prison escape of a rogue Russian leader,
who undoubtedly ordered a custom-designed high-speed ('over 200') trans-hemisphere vehicle to escape from teh law, but jack duped him and sold it to another kingpin for a better price, eh?

keep the world safe for democracy.
    world? globalism
safe? meaning: keep the system(s) safe from that which doesn't obey/comply/cooperate/support
democracy? overrated & subverted (proof: look at the situation in your own 'democratic' country & its 'bright' future)
how? via violent police/military interventions if oppression-lite (indoctrination, coercion, threats,...) fails to work

same here, at least regarding the first 3 movies (haven't seen the fourth one yet)

seems this (5th) movie uses the same idea as 3rd & 4th where they have willis stuck with a partner - now, while s.l. jackson was a great addition, the last 2 movies use a problematic combination in which (too) young/less known/noobish actors (in need of some media attention or pushed by their influential or nepotist friends) often degrade the overall experience, not to mention that willis is (along with others like arnie or stallone) getting too old for this kind of action movies (bombastic, physically intense) which will force the director to constantly use tricks (too many scenes with 'body doubles', shaky cam, quick cuts/editing, lame fighting sequences, static main actors, overacting, focus on cgi,...) in order to hide these inadequacies, so it is likely that this one will be pretty messy and (very) far away from the competence of its early (3) predecessors

what makes you say that: not good as the first 3 or not even close (but still rather good) or the kid was quite annoying or something else entirely (like: oh, just havin' a laugh )?

I don't know how to explain it right, it's just a bit different (not in a bad way)! The first three are "old" ones, and the fourth is rather new, so maybe because of that you won't like it? But for me I really enjoyed watching it and I would recommend it to anyone!

I guess age doesn't get to John McClane.
