If dial-up fees hadn't been a problem, I'd sure have spent a great deal of time online, even if the web of back then didn't offer as much as it does today.

Navigation was terrible mostly was due to my 14K modem. And get this: it was already used (bought it second hand).
So, I was charged by the hour for a download speed of less than half of the dial-up standards.

And softmodems were cheaper but drained the CPU to work! Good memories.

Never noticed the CPU drain but I did own a softmodem.
I imagine on a 233Mhz computer I would of noticed it. That was the PC I was using at that time.
Was the drain noticeable on max. speeds?

I remember a friend of mine was always showing off his US Robotics modem. And I still have nostalgia for the sound that the modem makes when you dialup to start an internet session. That sound bring back so many memories!

Mine sounded really awful. I guess modems sound different if they are internal and use the system speaker as a sound device.

Good question. I really don't remember.

You were able to turn the speaker off, though

I remember using pillows in an attempt to stop that noise. I was trying to reconnect after 00:00... It would of been OK if it was just one reconnect but once I was disconnect I could not connect again due to the limited number of connections available for that account. So I tried ...and tried... and tried in the middle of the night.

I thought, that 256 Kbps was the minimum in India this is too low.
