Thread: Best movie recomendation system

    Best movie recomendation system

I've always targeted my future views using imdb scores and endless google searches.
I'm kinda sick of that. This is the era of modern technology.I don't want to use my brain anymore I want something to feed me movie titles.
I'm looking for something similar to Last.fm's band recommendations system.Something to recommend me movies based on what I've already seen.
What are you're experiences with recommendation systems in general ?

Well, haz you tried imdb.com? Their recommendation system is better because, well, you rate movies there, so they know exactly what you like and how.
What does a scene tracker tell to a general tracker?

I'm interested in this too. At the moment I'm using site:imdb.com something list. Where something could be anything like thriller, crime etc.
It worked for me. Of course, doing it so, you may run into stupid lists but that's life.

I did custom lists on imdb for every movie that I remembered watching (started them about 5 months ago). I never did get a chance to complete them but all-in-all I am close to 100.

I also never judge a movie by it's rating. 10 users rate a film and it gets 9.2, is that right?

Most of the movies that are included in tops need to have over a certain amount of votes.

They show recommendations for each movie based on the genre and actors but that's not what I am looking for.

    Well you said:

So correct me if I'm wrong, or better yet don't even try because I'm not, but what you are asking is what you are receiving from imdb.com.

They show recommendations for each movie based on the genre and actors but that's not what I am looking for.
Also they take into consideration what you have already watched and rated.

    moviepilot.de

Its german, but more than great. Should be usable with gooogle translate.
    "I like waffles."
    "Pardon, you like what?"

true, its quite impractical & time consuming, not to mention usually biased in favor of the movies in question (especially regarding mainstream, cult movies & famous personnel), often crowded with fan reviews, critics on some art-wannabe trip, exploitation blogs, paid reviewers, mass marketing, trend followers, etc. - and when you manage to find a reviewer that seems to have a similar taste, as soon as one digs deeper it becomes apparent that the similarity is merely coincidental or superficial/inadequate, even within a single genre

a good way would be to sharpen & follow your instinct while quick-checking the movie info, so one can sooner notice relevant inadequacies, without wasting time on superfluous material, preferably before any downloading occurs - this way even the millions of imdb listed movies don't seem that imposing or worthwhile anymore, one realizes its pretty much a huge pile of junk with very low percentage of decently entertaining stuff

my selection method would roughly look like this:

    - avoid trailers, avoid professional reviewers or review sites (with one exception), avoid shorts, most tv/video/amateur/silent-era/art releases
    quick imdb check:
    - rating below 3: unworthy
    - rating below 5: unworthy (exceptions: some horror movies, some special circumstances)
    - review count: lets say 5...15 or less: unworthy
    - quick summary: lame/boring/...: often unworthy
    - starring actor/actress/director: might be worthwhile (repeated offenders get tougher requirements or get ignored)
    - reviews (the so-called 'hated it' section): quick check, what do they dislike about it, argumentation
    ...decision

sometimes it goes really fast without any special checking whatsoever (if its something outright interesting)

in conclusion: 'instinct' & quick imdb check is all it takes...and a healthy dosage of critical attitude ofc

in my experience the best recommendation system still is your brain combined with common sense. i never care about ratings but have a look at the plot, the cast and if available a trailer. that's usually enough to get a pretty good impression

The site is in Russian, but it even does not need the Google Translator

I just noticed they say on each movie recommendation that they are recommended because I had interest in other movies, what ever that means. So I guess that is the only method they use or maybe they have the algorithm I was talking about but they don't mention that.

I looked at the tour. That site also came up in some searches.
"You saw the following movies ? You may like this." <- What I am looking for.
I'm not going to rate all the goddamn movies I saw because it would take me a whole day to search for them and rate.
