a few other things regarding that 'dude' (spoilers ahead):

    - so he is a rogue top agent? since when are top british secret service agents...not really british (or close enough, like bond)?
    - so he is a top agent almost impervious to any psychological influence? yet his fixation/dependence on M ('the mother') is so enormous that he becomes psychologically 'unstable' once he loses her support
    - so on top of that, he uses inconspicuous hair color (as any top agent would), turns homosexual (currently popular) and hell-bent on getting revenge...for not being loved (by the system)?!
    - so he can use computers alone to manipulate global stock market(s), rig elections, access various power grids & top secret information databases & systems that are all supposedly naively fully accessible via the internet? nonsense
    - so he wants to get captured? leading bond & co. to his primary stronghold was stupid, even if his plan was successful he would have had to find/build another stronghold from scratch again since this one got exposed
    - so his advanced master encryption depends on a simple password like a name of some street which can be seen in plain txt just by looking at the code/gui?! not to mention that this encryption was invented by that underage whiz-kid from a brave new world of ridiculous nonsense...
    - so top secret government passwords, plans, computers, networks, systems, software,... are not being changed/revised/patched/upgraded for years, thus the 'dude' can plan his operation years in advance?
    - so the secret service has only recently started finding new unknown tunnels around their last-resort bunker (what happened to 'securing the perimeter'?), but the 'dude' already has a detailed map, active transmitters for people in the tunnels (showing their location in real-time), (empty!) trains ready to pass-by when he needs them, etc.
    - so he wants to escape undetected, yet upon entering the subway train he poses for the cameras by standing/waiting at the entrance facing the train station, as opposed to hiding behind a train wall or the like
    - so then he fails to abduct M from some poorly secured courthouse/room, does not secure the exits,...just like a top agent?!
    - so he wants M alive, but starts shooting at the skyfall mansion using a military helicopter (no one noticed it was missing, no one noticed an unauthorized flight), isn't even suspicious that the skyfall area looks like an obvious/ideal trap (the secret service didn't think of that either, didn't send any backup teams,... heh) far from prying public eyes, forgets about bond cars having hidden machine guns and other lethal gadgets, his elite soldiers are no match for some rusty old-timer with a shotgun and a pencil-pushing granny with a handgun (both being over 60-70 years old!)
    - so he manages to be as fast as bond (who was running through a familiar terrain), even though they showed him stumbling around (clearly stunned by the major explosion) a few moments ago
    - so he finally got to M and now he wants them to die together via voluntary suicide (what is this, a japanese tragedy?)...followed by a lame knife-in-the-back finale (bond naturally swims faster than dolphins and was apparently absent while they were teaching about hypothermia)

remember how bond got into M's house undetected after returning from his KIA (not MIA as it should have been) status - obviously, a top agent like the 'dude' would have tried this option first as the most simple/effective one to get to M, yet he brilliantly managed to overlook that option..., granted, that would have been the end of the movie right there - instead we get another hour or so of amazingly incompetent scriptwriting, which seems to be a norm these days, since, if there is no serious backlash from the viewers, why would the studios bother improving their products in the first place?

i watched this last week and was pretty underwhelmed.

it's a good film but not a good bond film, imo.

the structure it follows is so different to any other bond film ever made - i place it alongside the original casino royale as an 'oddball' of the series.

3 things that really niggled me though were:

    1) the cg - it's AWFUL. think die another day bad. i don't understand how certain shots were passed. granted, the movie is far from cg heavy, but when it appears, it looks REALLY sub par. (first instance i noticed was during the rooftop motorbike chase at the start - when the shot cuts to a head on ms of bond on the bike, my eyes bled). there's no excuse for it, especially in a franchise like this. there are multiple instances of this, but thankfully the longest shot is about 2 seconds. 2 seconds may not seem like a long time, but these shots stick out for all the wrong reasons.

    2) bardem is underused. he's a great actor - it's just that his role in the movie didn't utilise anything we all know he's capable of. the only good scene with him was his intro as he walked towards bond whilst delivering his monologue - shame his performance really started and ended there :( not his fault, but i reckon they could have cast anyone in that role.

    3) (spoiler) bardems/the evil genius' plan pivoted on SO much happening that he had ZERO control over. he's either psychic or.... nope, he'd have to be psychic to build a plan that relied on so many uncontrollable variables falling into place like he wanted.

that said, it was a good film - just not a good bond film!

I just finished watching this. As tako said, the movie changed or played with elements that were established and static throughout the Bond films (like that part with Q saying they no longer do explosive pens, or him actually having an important role as opposed to appearing just once), down to the ending. But for me, that was very welcome, since most previous movies follow the same formula: first they show us who the bad guy is, Bond is briefed, he gets some cool gadgets whose abilities will be a key point later on (car included), he goes after the villain (banging a chick in the way) but he gets away, then he goes again and there's a dramatic scene (like said chick being held at gunpoint) but this time he succeeds.

This one broke that scheme and it was refreshing to see.

bond naturally swims faster than dolphins and was apparently absent while they were teaching about hypothermia

They took some liberty with that indeed.
