    TorrentLeech and Donations

This post is at a high conspiracy level:

Does anybody else find torrentleech's donation practices weird? They partner up with a variety of folks (poker, webhosting) and now they have an entire credit system made so they can get money from people who complete surveys?

Do they really need that much money for servers?

I would love for someone to enlighten me how much (relatively) it costs for a torrent site to keep afloat.

TL is a massive site, and servers aren't free. As of November 2008, they had 14 servers which cost 6000 euro to keep alive. Now it's probably even more. But then again, What.cd is huge as well, and doesn't do that sort of stuff. So either bills are huge, they're keeping extra money for a sort of reserve fund, or someone's getting a nice slice of the pie.

imho they don't need half that much money, it's very obvious they're getting a lot of money out of the site, they fool users by telling them to join poker sites so they can get VIP and bonus, but ofcourse they take a percentage for every user referred,
and a lot of that stuff, just take a look at their new addon system.

I think it is logical to deduce that someone (sysop) is taking money for themselves. They are not transparent about their donation practices. They're selling warez. The tracker is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more donation orientated than most private trackers out there. Would be surprised if an admin wasn't selling invites on a backup staff account or something. Money murders ethics.

There isn't a day they don't send PMs begging for donations, and I mean that literally.

I remember a while back a site called Chronic tracker or something along those lines. Lots of begging.

Anyway, what are the stats(users and torrent activity) on TL

Apparently, the disabled invite system is a ploy for people to get invited by buying a seedbox from them. That seems like a bit too much or me.

TL has been a money making machine since the beginning...

What about those bitcoins? Is it easy to change them into real money?

Yes. BitCoin is alternative digital currency. It just provides more (nearly complete) anonymity. I guess they think more users will donate to a warez related site if they consider it safer.
