Than don't go making it out like it's a bad thing, or like you're the web designer that wrote the book on readability. Personal preference is understandable.
As for changing the background you can write a css hack, stylish is available in an array of browsers nowadays, or a greasemonkey script that is also supported in every browser. Or just go ahead and change the theme to something else that suits you.
